New Missions
  • Flux to Give - Blacksmiths know that furies can be harvested for the best flux. Snuff the fires and bring it home.
  • Takeout Pizza - The troops are hungry, go pick up a few pies.
  • Searching for the Light - We need to find more paladin allies if we are to have any hope of bringing the fight to the Legion.
  • Eyes to the Skies - There have been sightings of Legion scouts in the skies above the forest canopy.
  • Lost to History - An ancient scroll in our archives describes a Titan communicator somewhere in Val'Sharah that could provide us with invaluable knowledge.
  • Retaining Control - We've heard rumors of a powerful new demon presence in Faronaar. We should investigate before it threatens our hold on the area.
  • The Light Reveals - There is a powerful beacon of the Light somewhere in Azsuna. We should find it.
  • A Friend In Need - Senegos' prime consort has sent out a cry for help. We owe it to our allies to send aid.
  • [TEST] Takeout Pizza - The troops are hungry, go pick up a few pies.
  • Hunting the Pillars - There is someone out here who knows about the Pillars of Creation. We must find them.
  • Brothers in Arms - We need the most fearless Illidari to join our cause if we are to have any chance of defeating the Legion.
  • Finding a Gateway - If we can find a usable Legion gateway, we can launch an assault on one of their worlds and take it as our own.
  • Reconnaissance: Azsuna - Azsuna appears to be an idyllic island teeming with wildlife. Reports of magical activity in the area, however, suggest that not all is as it sems.
  • Reconnaissance: Val'Sharah - Val'Sharah once stood as the heart of druidism on Azeroth, the mighty world tree Shaladrassil standing tall at its center. There are sure to be long-lost secrets hidden in its thickets that would be useful against the Legion.
  • Reconnaissance: Highmountain - Highmountain is all that stands of the range that once divided Suramar from the northern lands. Rumor has it that the leader of an ancient tauren tribe on the lonely mountain's slopes wields a relic of legendary power.
  • Reconnaissance: Stormheim - Once grazing land for the beasts of the Suramar elves, the bluffs of Stormheim now serve as the capital of an ancient race of Vrykul that fled the northern lands after the Great Sundering.
  • Never Leave a Knight Behind - Our scouts report seeing a knight trapped by a horde of demons. Destroy the demons and bring our brother in arms home.
  • The Creeping Nightmare - The forces of Nightmare are closing in on a sacred moonwell. We can't let it fall into darkness.
  • Calling Their Bluff - A Fel Lord may be building up forces in the harsh northern bluffs.
  • Coastal Treasure - There is a powerful beacon of the Light somewhere in Stormheim. We should find it.
  • Tides of War - The Legion is planning to launch a coastal assault on Stormheim. We need to find out where.
  • The "Emissary" - We've heard whispers that a demon has been offering the Highmountain tauren dark power.
  • The Last Shrine - There is a powerful beacon of the Light somewhere in Highmountain. We should find it.
  • Protecting the Innocent - A captured imp told us his masters were planning to attack a Highmountain tauren village - we need to figure out which one.
  • Test 7.0 mission 1 - Description of test mission 1
  • Test 7.0 mission 2 - Description of test mission 2
  • Test 7.0 mission 3 - Description of test mission 3
  • The Veteran - We can go after the heavy hitters later, right now we need someone who has seen everything. There is one that has been in every war for the past few decades and can do more than kill.
  • Growing the Order - The only way to strengthen our order is through continued focus and training. There is an ancient master who may be willing to share his martial secrets. Seek him out and train with him, and return stronger and wiser.
  • A Master Summoner - We will need to recruit a master summoner to assist the Council. A warlock of a notable family was rumored to be spotted in Dalaran.
  • An Offer They Can't Refuse - We believe we can lure a worthwhile rogue into our order with the right... motivation.
  • Never Trust a Mage - The mages of Dalaran seem trustworthy... but are they?
  • The Other City of Mages - Akazamzarak knows where he can find a whole city of mages, so long as you don't mind the smell.

  • Immolation - Some demon hunters take the mantra "fight fire with fire" a bit too seriously.
  • Devour Magic - Magic is a delicacy among the Illidari. Tastes like chicken.
  • Vengeful Retreat - Used by demon hunters to who are... not prepared.
  • Metamorphosis - Demon hunters can unleash the demon within to defeat the strongest foes.

Outlaws do have Stealth, but it's less of a focus for them. (WarcraftDevs)

New BOA Mythic 5 man trinket drops attached to Loot eligibility? Is it obtainable with subsequent kills in the same week?
You need to be eligible for loot in order to win the trinkets. (WarcraftDevs)

PvP
Hi Holunki, will there be any sort of PvP Class Talent Previews coming, or just wait until Beta?
I don't think we'll do a PvP talent preview. We are hoping to have a broader PvP systems blog though. (holinka)

If I turn off XP, can I still gain PvP lvl? Will I have access to same PvP spell & prestige reward as a lvl 10 like a lvl 110?
The PvP Honor system is only available at level 110. (WarcraftDevs)

Transmogrification
New tmog system: Will gear tooltips reflect if we have the item's appearance saved to the system? Would help TONS collecting.
We'll make the info available through some means, but haven't decided exactly how yet. (WarcraftDevs)

Legion - Artifact Trait Calculator
We finally have an early version of an Artifact Trait calculator ready! It is nowhere near complete, nor are the actual traits, so please keep that in mind!

  • Each artifact trait tree starts at the thick gold border trait, not the gold dragons.
  • After selecting that trait, you can select any of the ones directly connected to it.
  • For most classes, there are 3 Major Traits that are 4-5 deep in the trait tree. These are capped at Rank 1.
  • The Minor Traits in the rest of the tree are capped to 3 by default.
  • The cap on traits can be increased by up to 2 using relics. This leads to some fun traits:
  • The current trait calculator doesn't restrict what traits you can select or support relics. This is coming in a future update.

Big News, Everyone! Gnome Hunters Are Coming
Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)
We have some big news concerning some of the smallest residents in Azeroth. Gnome players will at long last be able to play the Hunter class! That’s right—in World of Warcraft: Legion, you too will be able to rise up to become a big game hunter.

One for the Gnomies
Long at the forefront of cutting-edge technology in Azeroth, the inventive gnomes are finally ready to break out the big guns. Their propensity for things that go “bang” and knack for high-tech weapons like rocket launchers, high-powered rifles, and death rays make them perfect candidates for hunting down prey.

And with the events about to unfold on the Broken Shore, High Tinker Mekkatorque has commanded his people to get outfitted and ready for battle—any way they know how.

Mecha-Minions
Of course, gnomes wouldn’t be gnomes if they didn’t apply their own particular brand of engineering to their job—this time in the form of a new Hunter pet family: Mechanical.

Gnome and Goblin players will be able to tame this new kind of hard-to-find pet right from the start. Other races will also be able to learn how to control these artificial animals via a device Engineers will be able to make.

Most Mechanical pets will be challenging to tame, requiring you to first locate them and then use your Hunter abilities in unusual ways. (You didn’t think we’d make it easy, did you?)

For example, one rare mechanostrider requires you to create a special punch card that grants access to a closed section of Gnomeregan (we hope you remember the way). Once you locate the clockwork creature, you’ll then need to figure out how to overload its circuits. Solve the puzzle, and you’ll have this magnificent mechanized minion striding by your side.

What do you feed a high-tech pet that’s not technically alive? Mechanical Bits, of course! Hunters will be able to keep their shiny metal friends “happy” and “healthy” through the creative use of Engineering supplies such as a Handful of Copper Bolts.

And just in case you think we’re lowering ourselves by making “small” jokes, we present to you the Gnome Hunter’s starting pet—the Giant Mechanical Rabbit—as proof!

Will you rise up to the challenge and collect them all?

The best thing you can do as a developer is provide context. If even some players understand your logic, then they can explain it to other players, and maybe you won't see the same comments over and over again.
On the other hand, if players can offer good arguments for why your designs are in fact problematic, then you should really listen to them, keeping in mind that "players" are not some kind of homogenous entity that is always going to speak with some kind of unified voice. (Players themselves forget this with some frequency.)

Should the way developers communicate about their game be, in some sense, considered part of the game itself?
It is definitely part of the studio / publisher's brand. For example, Riot works hard to try to build up player trust and in return players sometimes forgive us for making a dumb mistake because they trust (hopefully) our intentions and that we'll do the right thing in the long run.
I do think players sometimes focus too much on communication (and I say that as someone who has spent 1000s of hours communicating to players). Great communication can't alone fix a game you're not enjoying and you can enjoy games despite lackluster communication.

Re: forms, druids in WoW are a classic example for newer players (for whom WoW is a classic). It seemed cat form was too squishy vs melee, but knowing, or showing, that you have to stun the druid now, while she is in caster form, so you can apply burst damage without mitigation. Denying the shift
I agree that denying the shift was interesting, but we struggled a ton with balancing druids overall. It felt awesome to the druid to shift to caster form to heal and then bear form to mitigate damage, but the other side wondered what exactly they were supposed to do against an opponent who for all purposes was a tank caster. When we moved away from shifting to just "okay, you can always be a cat or moonkin" thrn thr class didn't feel like a shifter at all.

I'm blaming myself here, but WoW druids were one of the examples I had in mind when I said that shifters were hard to get right.

Also, if someone thinks I'm arrogant because I troll people who insult me personally, I'm fine with that. (holinka)
I think the community wants more admittance to poor design
One challenge there is once you admit a mistake, there can be an expectation that it will be fixed very quickly. (OccupyGStreet)

Interviews Watcher with are so good because he doesn't do this. He admits mistakes and seems to know what players think.
Do you think players often claim "arrogant" when what they mean is "I disagree with your direction?" (OccupyGStreet)
Yes. He is very good at not spinning things. You can trust what he says. (OccupyGStreet)

My view of you changed over time aswell. Often you were seen by the community as the decider & bringer of bad news/nerfs
I'm not a fan of the "spokesperson" policy. The more devs who communicate, the more real the whole org appears to be. (OccupyGStreet)

You gave me a headache! Btw, why the focus on humble? Why not something else (empathetic, informative, ...)?
I don't get accused that much of lacking empathy or not sharing information. Arrogant comes up a lot so I wanted to dive into it. (OccupyGStreet)

Arrogance is easier to achieve with 140 characters.
.That is true! I know I come across as flippant on Twitter because I lack characters for nuance. (OccupyGStreet)

If you could guarantee "flawless" CM feedback, would you still communicate with players? And why?
Great question. I think so, just because I personally enjoy it. (OccupyGStreet)
Also, no disrespect to CMs, but players probably also enjoy being able to reach devs directly. (OccupyGStreet)

What if there was a better way to structure the community? Some people are much better at feedback and others dilute them
I've considered some kind of "anyone can view but invite only to post." Would that feel too velvet ropey? (OccupyGStreet)

Reputation / Questing
What's your take on WoW starting zones ? For example, what would you change if you could ?
We redid Elwynn a couple of times while I was there. Emphasis was on showing a good time and telling the story, not teaching. (OccupyGStreet)
I do think you end up killing tiny wildlife for a bit too long in most zones. (OccupyGStreet)

Misc
success breeds arrogance. It's human nature.
It's funny because I see the opposite where I work. Success just creates greater pressure to live up to those expectations. (OccupyGStreet)

I am pretty sympathetic to those devs actually.

It is really hard to communicate with players. Players can be cruel, sometimes intentionally, sometimes no, and you need excessively thick skin not to get worn down but it. It can take a lot of time, and players might feel abandoned if you only communicate in short bursts and then have to go tend to other things. Your bosses or coworkers might get ticked if your messaging was bad, because say you hinted about an upcoming feature too strongly or showed the company in a bad light.

There are solutions to these problems, but none are perfect. For example, you can have community managers collate feedback from the developers and present it second-hand. That tactic risks not feeling authentic, not portraying the devs as human, and has the usual "game of telephone" risks when communication gets handed from person to person.

Riot encourages, and nearly requires, Rioters to go out and talk to players. Even then a lot of people here are reluctant or scared to do so.

What do you think about having 1 designer with PR training on a development team whose sole job is to serve as an outbound line to the community so the information is firsthand from the team instead of risking a Chinese Whispers incident with the community managers?
I definitely think that helps, and similarly, the most effective CMs I have worked with had a ton of game knowledge and design talent, which helped bridge the communication gap.

I view part of the design job to be communication, so I expect designers on my team to improve their communication skills, the same way they should improve their problem solving and analytical skills.

For what it's worth, these sorts of things are exactly what we have the hacks@blizzard.com email address for. Emailing that address is significantly more likely to result in action being taken than simply posting them on the forums. Of course, if you also emailed this report to that address, then that's all set. Just thought it worth mentioning.

If you do feel the need to make a forum post about it, that's fine, but please remember that calling out specific players in a public post is against the forum rules. While it's certainly true that cheaters exist, there are also a lot of players who get accused of cheating wrongly, and we want to avoid having legit players' names dragged through the mud.

Note that we can see previous versions of a post, so if you want to include a link to a video or name of a player in a post, you can edit it out immediately after posting and we'll be able to find it easily.

We know, Lore. We just don't believe the hacks@blizzard results in meaningful action. Furthermore, we're so frustrated with the rampant cheating that calling out these inbred mongrels on the forum is a form of community catharsis and well worth the forum bans. But thanks for swinging by.
To your first point, I totally get where that perception comes from. Our policy has historically been to disclose as little information about actioned accounts as possible, but that's a conversation I'd like to revisit with the relevant people here at Blizzard. If we can find a way to be more open about when and what actions we take, I think that'd be pretty awesome. Can't make any promises though -- those are decisions I don't get to make.

To the second point, that's completely understandable as well. I'd just rather not see people banned from the forums who are only trying to help us catch more cheaters. That's why I recommended editing links out of posts after making them. We'll still see the links, but no forum rules are being broken. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

It's rarely just begin stubborn. In my experience, game designers are very good at "killing their darlings." I say that, because you just can't be very successful at this job unless you can give up on ideas that you desperately love, but just aren't working. Stubborn associate designers churn out of the system quickly.

Practically speaking, what might appear to be stubborness is more likely caused by on or more of the following issues:

1) The designer doesn't like the design either, but hasn't come up with a workable solution yet. This is often the case when the designer's time is better spent on an even bigger problem. Resources, especially time, are not infinite.

2) The design seems unpopular to you, but is actually pretty popular overall. (This can be the most frustrating when the designer doesn't like the idea either!) "Universally hated"(or "univerally loved") really isn't a thing in game design. Our jobs would be easy if that was the case.

3) The designer knows the design isn't working, but knows if she removes the design that it will be nearly impossible to ever put it back in. It's easier to iterate on a design as is than to remove it and hope to restore it in the future.

4) The design is serving a greater purpose you may not realize. Maybe the implementation serves to keep server spam at a minimum or makes it harder to cheat. Ideally the team would eventually find a solution that is more elegant and still meets the technical requirements.

5) The designer wants to get feedback on the idea so he can iterate further. I admit this one is a little weak because it risks making players feel like guinea pigs. On the other hand, you don't want to leave players out of the discussion either.

6) The design isn't awesome, but it's good enough, and the cost of changing it is very high. By "cost" here I am not refering to a monatery amount but the risk of slipping the product. If the feature is core to the game, it may be worth the risk of last minute change or slipping. If it's a minor feature, there is more player value in not holding the game in the naive attempt to achieve absolute perfection.

7) The team already has a new design in testing but isn't ready to talk about it yet. This can be ongoing if the new design requires a lot of iteration before it can go live.

8) And finally, you may be right and the designer may be wrong, and just hasn't realized it yet.

why would a dev keep a mechanic in game that players absolutely hate, is it fun if only the dev thinks its fun? (rune of pow)
As a dev, you often run into systems with potential hat aren't there yet. Yanking them means they likely will never get there (OccupyGStreet)

Darkmoon Faire Returns [December 6-13]
The wondrous and mystical Darkmoon Faire returns to Azeroth on November 1, and if you haven’t completed all of Silas Darkmoon’s new Darkmoon Races, now’s the time! Test your speed and agility on a variety of racing mounts as you dodge electrifying obstacles and zip all over Darkmoon Island for rewards and achievements. Feast of Winter Veil [December 16 – January 2]
The Feast of Winter Veil is one of the most anticipated events of the year! While enjoying a freshly nutmegged cup of nog, and crunching on a crumbly cookie or two, be sure to visit Greatfather Winter in Ironforge if you’re Alliance, or Great-father Winter in Orgrimmar if you’re Horde. While there, you’ll find a few treats, and surely a few tasks to take on as well.

Winter Veil is the only time of the year you can acquire these pets: Clockwork Rocket Bot, Winter Reindeer, Tiny Snowman, Winter's Little Helpers, Lump of Coal.

Crafters of all stripes, rejoice! You can enhance your knowledge with these seasonal recipes: Elixir of Frost Power, Edge of Winter, Hot Apple Cider, Gingerbread Cookie, Egg Nog, Winter's Might, Snowmaster 9000, Gloves of the Greatfather, Winter Boots, Green Winter Clothes, Red Winter Clothes, Green Holiday Shirt.

New Year [December 31]
Happy New Year! Join the celebrations starting at 6:00 a.m. realm time, December 31, and check out the fireworks in the skies above the cities every hour on the hour. Sample the exotic brews and libations carted in from around the world of Azeroth, and /dance your way into the new year as a part of the celebration. For those looking to avoid trouble—or get into it—you may want to steer clear of—or head toward—Booty Bay as the guards there appear to be spending more time enjoying themselves than enforcing town rules (at least into the morning hours).

Deploying a new build right before finals week? Cruel and unusual punishment. (I can't wait though, the failure will be extremely fun.)

You should be able to fit all the studying in today right?

PvP
Can you confirm that the legendary effects will, or will not, work in rated/non-rated PvP?
Legendary effects will not work in instanced PvP (like Battlegrounds or Arenas). They *will* work in World PvP. (WarcraftDevs)

are Artifact talents working in pvp? Cause so far with talents/pvp looked good. Artifact is looking potentially game breaking
Artifact traits will work in all PvP situations. If a particular trait is problematic, we will address it. (WarcraftDevs)

hey what level do we get the honor levels? and what would be the max honor level at level 20? just so i can get a grasp on this
The Honor system and PvP talents are only for max level players. For #Legion, that's 110. (WarcraftDevs)

Artifacts:
  • Re-logging during "Stage 6 - The Purge" for Frost Death Knights will cause a client crash.
  • Legion Alpha template Warriors and Priests have a significant delay before beginning their Artifact experiences.
  • Balance Druids cannot use Teleport: Moonglade after completing the Karazhan Catacombs and obtaining their Artifact weapon.
  • Armaments of the Black Wyrm cannot be interacted with if you are not using the Protection specialization.
  • The Mistweaver scenario will sometimes not reset and can roadblock progression if players abandon "The Emperors Gift".
  • Players will die after using the Essence of the Whirlwind to enter the Windwalker Monk artifact scenario.
  • The Warlock verison of "Following the Curse" will not update upon reaching Ariden's Camp and cannot be completed while the PvP flag is enabled.

Quests:
  • The completion page for "Where Respect is Due" is missing description information for the Glass-Extracted Leystone.
  • Players will not always be placed inside the Murky vehicle when interacting with Murky's Egg during "Murlocs: The Next Generation" and "Oh, the Clawdacity!"
  • The War Eagle vehicle has a placeholder ability during "Justice Reigns From Above"
  • "Felstorm's Plea" is lacking a quest header.

Order Halls:
  • Opening your map in the Dreamgrove will show a map of the Broken Shore.
  • The broadcast line for the Hunter Order Hall formation experience can be seen by all nearby players.
  • The broadcast line for the Warrior Order Hall formation experience can be seen by all nearby players.

Miscellaneous:
  • Area triggers that check for a players faction do not function when the player is flagged for PvP.
  • Transports are not appearing.

Character Models:
  • Blood Elf and Night Elf character models will default to HD, regardless of class.
  • Female HD Draenei do not loop the Stun animation.
  • Female SD Orcs may have missing geometry when equipping certain leg armor items.
  • Demon Hunter faces can experience texture issues when cycling through tattoo customization options.

Items:
  • Bows and crossbows are not animating or showing their ammo when reloaded.

With the promise of 1,000's of worlds to conquer Skovald has taken up the Legion's offer. Before being allowed to fully enter the ranks of the Burning Legion he must first secure the Aegis of Aggramar from Odyn's realm of the Halls of Valor only then can his endless conquest begin.

  • Overview - One player will pick up the Aegis of Aggramar and use it to reflect God-King Skovald's attacks back at him for a short period. The Aegis then overpowers and the player must relinquish control. Skovald then takes control of the Aegis and unleashes its power upon the players.

Upon being reduced to 80% of his life, Odyn ends the fight.

Overall they're pretty solid, but we'll tweak them as needed for Legion. (1/2) (WarcraftDevs)
The Human racials in particular may need to change, to account for the new PvP systems. (2/2) (WarcraftDevs)

Classes
Discussion topic: If someone said, "DPS performance is measured granularly. HOW MUCH dps did you do? Tank performance is measured mostly... (Celestalon)
...in binary terms. Did you mess up a taunt swap, forget to cooldown, lose aggro? DPS and Mitigation hardly matter." (Celestalon)
Would you agree/disagree with this statement? Do you think it's a good or bad thing? (Celestalon)
Clarification, I'm not referring to the issue of how to measure Tank performance, but rather to what actually matters or doesn't matter. (Celestalon)

are we going to see any ways of pushing more offense as tanks in the talent trees or kit?
Trading defense for offense is just one of many ways we can create engaging tank gameplay. (1/2) (WarcraftDevs)
It's something we'll continue to iterate on, and feedback is especially important! (2/2) (WarcraftDevs)

Will ability perks go away completely in #legion or new ones?
Draenor Perks will be retiring. Many of their effects are being "baked in" to the baseline abilities, however. (WarcraftDevs)

Mage (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator)
will Hotstreak for fire mages still be a buff? Or will it be part of the UI and not dispellable?
Hot Streak remains as a buff. (WarcraftDevs)

Monk (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator)
How is Windwalker's Serenity talent going to work with their new mastery? Seems counterproductive.
Serenity will be tweaked to account for the new Windwalker Mastery. (WarcraftDevs)

Rogue (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator)
Is Combat spec (now Outlaw) the only one being renamed? Others could also be renamed (Holy Priest vs Holy Pally?).
Holy, Restoration, and Protection have been shared forever, and describe the specs. Combat was changed to Outlaw because it didn't. (WarcraftDevs)

Is killing spree still available in legion?
Killing Spree is a talent option for Outlaws. (WarcraftDevs)

Artifact Weapons
How long do you anticipate it taking a reasonably diligent player to max out traits a weapon? A month? Multiple patches?
Not multiple patches. Most likely between 1 and 3 months, but we haven't finalized tuning on it yet. (WarcraftDevs)

can we unlock ALL artifact traits or do we have to choose certain paths?
You will eventually be able to unlock the entire tree. (WarcraftDevs)

PvE
Does the highest ilvl legendary ring usage affect all players (with ring) dps or is it their own ilvl that counts when popped
Each person's own ring determines the magnitude of the effect for them. (WarcraftDevs)

PvP
how is The arena prep time going to work with all this talents?,pve, pvp, artifact.
Talents and PvP talents can be changed during Preparation. Artifact traits cannot. (WarcraftDevs)

will honor talents unlock quite "fast" or is it going to be "hard"?
The exact rate is yet to be determined, but the intention is that reaching max honor level will take some time. (WarcraftDevs)

why would people serious about pvp reset their level for prestige and then re-level? They would lose pvp effectiveness, right?
Prestige is an optional form of progression with its own rewards. There is a related cost, and some players may choose not to do it. (WarcraftDevs)

Will the PvP gear stat template be available for lower levels? Or will our gear in PvP be the PvE stats at lower levels?
The PvP stat templates will apply at lower levels (and scale accordingly). (WarcraftDevs)
Will iLvL have any impact on lower level PvP, or will the scaling take care of any difference in stats?
Scaling at lower levels will occur in a similar manner to max level. (WarcraftDevs)

Transmogrification
Is it safe to sell/delete some of the transmog items? Are they already stored on account or have to wait for launch ?
Outside of quest reward items, you'll want to wait until the transmog system is available in-game before you delete any gear. (WarcraftDevs)

I have a lot of thoughts here, but I want to caveat that this is mostly anecdotal and not backed up by data.

First, and probably most importantly, I think Warcraft 3 started a trend that continued with the MOBAs to focus on micromanagement of a single hero rather than micromanagement of an entire economy. A lot of players clearly found the single-character-focus satisfying. RTS games became MOBAs the same way dinosaurs became birds.

Second, back in the RTS heydey, I felt like there were a lot of large games being played on LANs in offices and colleges. Perhaps due to esports, but certainly due to Starcraft 2, the focus drifted more to one-on-one games. Age of Empires was at its best in 3v3 or 4v4, which lent itself well to a lot of casual multiplayer

Third, it used to be more possible to compete in an RTS as a strategic player who made smart decisions and not just a twitch player with good reflexes. To be pro, you need to be good at both, but it's hard to even have much fun these days if you're bad at micro.

Fourth, back in the RTS heydey, you might meet someone, find out they play the same RTS as you, and agree to play together sometime. In later years, you'd quickly realize you were radically different ELOs and just say "Oh." To be fair, this happens in MOBAs as well, but the 5v5 nature helps a little there.

Fifth, I think over time the games just lived out their lifespan. There was such a leap in complexity of everything -- strategies, unit design, counter units, systems -- that it was difficult for anyone but pretty hardcore players to keep up. Yet, if they hadn't keep adding those systems, the engaged players might have gotten bored. I keep hoping that it feels like it's time for RTS as a genre to come back. Not yet.

Finally, I think it is easier to consume the content in an RTS. The developers can try to throw interesting maps or cool hooks at you in single-player, but you're going to see all of the units and buildings pretty quickly in multiplayer. MMOs can continually offer you new things to explore and enemies to fight. MOBAs add new champions. An RTS had to wait for a massive expansion, that in turn added to the bloat I mentioned in #5.

I miss the storytelling of RTS campaigns. RPGs dont do the big stories as well imo
On WoW, I occasionally wished for Warcraft 4, just because it would give us such fertile ground for new stories. (OccupyGStreet)

So you agree that RTS died? so sc2 confirmed daed gaem?
It's more that 10 years ago there were like 20 RTS franchises. Now there are a couple. (OccupyGStreet)
Maybe "dead" is too strong (and that came from the questioner). But the RTS field is much smaller than when I first got into it. (OccupyGStreet)

interesting thoughts - what do you think would have happened if MOBAS were introduced prior to RTS?
I do think RTS delivers a particular experience (you're the commander) in a way few other genres can do well. (OccupyGStreet)
4X games make you feel like a leader, but the battlefield is much more shallow IMO. (The rest of the experience is deeper though) (OccupyGStreet)
So maybe RTS would have doubled down on that aspect -- less about the hero on the field and more about the soldiers. Shrug. (OccupyGStreet)

Isn't the ideal MMO where all content is always relevant in some way and new content is icing on the cake?
IDK. Some sense of progression is nice too. I don't need to be running Keep on the Borderlands when I am 20th level. (OccupyGStreet)

Sure, you can start with wildly wrong numbers, and iterate, but is slower. (Celestalon)
Could you provide a real example, please?
It can be complex stuff, like figuring out the paths of Cinderstorm, or... (Celestalon)
...it can be simple stuff, like estimating how long people will take to... (Celestalon)
...complete your quest POI, to know how many quests you need to make. (Celestalon)
(Or what drop rate to make the quest item, to average the intended kill count) (Celestalon)
Even the less-mathy sorts of designers still use some math. (Celestalon)

Do you think that percentages & statistics are the most common types of math? I mean, the most common type of math involved in game design in general.
Beyond basic math? Across all types of game design, probably, yes. (Celestalon)

Iteration is at the heart of design, and that means making a lot of mistakes...and then fixing them! (OccupyGStreet)

https://t.co/JXydljarAI I wouldn't even entertain this. Since WC3, Orcs have hunched. Don't cave, Chris.
.what if it was an option and not a requirement/forced change? I get the argument, hero orcs aren't hunched, cont. (artofcgrobinson)
.if we did this IMO we would need to give U the choice of which posture you feel most reps your character (artofcgrobinson)
That's, like, the perfect solution. Could the Forsaken get the same treatment?
I fundamentally feel like forsaken posture is appropriate for the character, orcs are different (artofcgrobinson)

I know the plan is to match visual color to weapon but pls consider leaving red flame on blue sword https://t.co/H9nt0Tf8o9
that does look cool, will consider (artofcgrobinson)

Hey man, I love plate armor sets, was wondering if y'all could maybe use this model on newer sets
I'm pretty sure we are, those are used primarily for leather/cloth but we occasionally find a way to sneak them into plate (artofcgrobinson)

Why are Mr. Didier's quotes all through the Art of World of Warcraft book?!
Samwise started all of this with original Warcraft games, any WoW art book would be incomplete without his words (artofcgrobinson)
he also continues to contribute to WoW whenever he can - he painted the goblin and worgen crests for instance (artofcgrobinson)

Did u get legion alpha? I'm currently a happy(not) member of No-access club
I did not. I know people, but since I'm not actively playing, it seems mean to deny someone who might appreciate it more. (OccupyGStreet)

do you get alpha/beta access on the FF list since your a former dev? always wondered about that.
I rarely ever get early access as a courtesy. Often other devs are the last people you want seeing your unfinished game. (OccupyGStreet)
Ah that's an interesting thought thinking about it, did you go to blizzcon this year btw? If not, do you plan on going again?
I didn't go this year. I had hoped to but it didn't feel right. Maybe next year. (OccupyGStreet)
It's for Blizzard, not me, and I worry about the way it would come across, like who does he think he is? (OccupyGStreet)

Do you ever think that the events of Wrath were a bit too soon? I, personally, feel like that was the big finish.
It was interesting how many players considered that the end of the story. (OccupyGStreet)
I always considered the story to be orcs vs humans, since those were the original two RTS games. Shrug. (OccupyGStreet)
It probs comes from the majority of players being active from WC3 to Wrath but I feel the corrupted hero story resounds more
Even before I was at Blizzard, I always said: if in doubt, make the hero become corrupted (Arthas, Kerrigan, Diablo...) (OccupyGStreet)

Computers - Setup of the Month
Each month or so we will post a couple of hardware setups for those of you who are thinking of upgrading their computer!

This month
The current SSD prices are fairly flat right now, with most SSDs under $0.50 per gigabyte when on sale. No new hardware that is worth waiting for is expected anytime soon.

Depending on how much you want to overclock, you may need to spend a bit more for a better CPU cooler like the NH-D14.

Unless you are doing a lot of video rendering or streaming, you do not need the 6700K and should spend that money elsewhere.

Make sure to keep your AMD and Nvidia drivers up to date. Don't forget to visit the Computer Forum for any extra questions!

Legion - Invasion Event
There are some pieces of the pre-expansion invasion event currently in the Alpha, but they are very much incomplete.

  • The Legion will invade several different zones of Azeroth. Right now they can be found in Tanaris, Hillsbrad, and the Wetlands.
  • Right now there are small invasions, larger invasions, and named NPCs marked on the map when you are in each of those zones.
  • There are a few quests that seem to be related, piloting a vehicle to kill Legion invaders, as well as timed kills.
  • Several of the invasion sites have a chest you can open. Currently the chest only contains a placeholder, Timeless Isle items.
  • There are also buffs you can pick up at some of the invasion sites, such as Felrune Barrier.
  • There are several scenarios that may be related to the event invasion point.

Due to the changes to PvP gear and the introduction of PvP talents in Legion, the Warlords of Draenor implementation of Every Man for Himself no longer makes sense. So instead, we’re trying out an implementation that functions similar to Will of the Forsaken. It will only break Stun effects, but won’t trigger the full 2-minute cooldown on your Gladiator’s Medallion ability (which is the Legion version of the current Medallion trinkets).

As always, this change isn't final, and we’re looking for feedback from testers once they’ve had some time with it. Please feel free to share your initial thoughts on this here, and for Alpha testers, take your feedback to the Alpha general discussion forum.

  • Overview - The Amalgam of Souls battles players until reaching 50% health, at which point it ruptures, splitting into the tortured souls of the Ravencrest ancestors.
    • Damage Dealers -
    • Healer -
    • Tank -
      • Move out of the way of Reap Soul to avoid heavy damage.
      • After the Amalgam splits, Staellis Rivermoor will need to be tanked.

Returning to her ancestral home, she has sacrificed everything - including her very soul - to defend what she could not during the War of the Ancients.

  • Overview - Ilyssana fights players on the ground as her Fury bar builds. When it fills, she leaps into the air and unleashes deadly eye beams as she calls her risen guards to dispatch the party. This effect stacks.

Smashspite the Hateful
A brutal, imposing Mo'arg Lieutenant, Smashspite the Hateful led the Legion's invasion of Black Rook Hold and commanded defense of the keep from the air via his colony of felbats.

  • Overview - Smashspite engages players on the ground with heavy physical attacks, periodically calling in felbats to cover the ground in deadly Fel Vomit.
    • Tank -
      • Minimize damage taken by Smashspite's melee attacks to slow the rate at which his Brutality bar fills.
      • When Smashspite's Brutality bar fills, he will use Brutal Haymaker, inflicting heavy damage and increasing damage taken for a short time.
      • Stand between Smashspite and his target to intercept Hateful Charge if they have the debuff from intercepting an earlier charge and you don't.
    • Healer -
      • Earthshaking Stomp inflicts heavy damage to the party.

Smashspite performs a Hateful Charge in the direction of the affected player when Hateful Gaze expires.
    • Hateful Charge - Impacts the first player he comes into contact with, inflicting 1,041,000 Physical damage, knocking them back, and increasing their damage taken from Hateful Charges by 100% for 60 sec.
  • Brutality - Smashspite's damaging melee attacks grant him Brutality in proportion to the damage done.
When he reaches 100 Brutality, he will unleash a Brutal Haymaker at his current target.
    • Brutal Haymaker - Smashspite punches his current target, inflicting 1,690,000 Physical damage and increasing damage taken by 100% for 10 sec.

Lord Kur'talos Ravencrest
Kur'talos Ravencrest, Lord of Black Rook Hold, was the commander of the Kal'dorei Resistance during the War of the Ancients until he was assassinated by Varo'then under the orders of Queen Aszhara. Millenea later, Gul'dan's foul soul magic has awoken Ravencrest's soul, and those of his ancestors, from their eternal repose. The Legion, seeking revenge, gleefully forced his soul into his body and mesmerized him, forcing him to eternally relive the horrors of the War of Ancients.

  • Overview - Ravencrest will engage the player while his advisor, Latosius, teleports around the area, attacking wih dark magic. Once Ravencrest has been reduced to 20% health, Latosius will reveal his true form - that of the dreadlord Dantallionax, and will rip Ravencrest's soul from his body. As Ravencrest calls on the souls of his ancestors to empower the party, they must defeat Dantallionax and cleanse the Legion from Black Rook Hold.
  • Stage 1: Lord of the Keep -
    • Unerring Shear - A deadly attack shears the target, inflicting 2,015,000 Physical damage and reducing their maximum health by 20%.

      • Cloud of Hypnosis - Creates a cloud of hypnotic gas, causing anyone who enters it to be put to sleep. Taking damage or leaving the cloud will remove the effect.
      • Dreadlord's Guile - Splits into several images, who each cast Dark Obliteration in sequence.
      • Shadow Bolt Volley - Launches a volley of shadow energy towards all players, inflicting 987,192 Shadow damage.

That said, if you were able to bypass the map and manually went to the zones, it's possible that certain NPCs are in a different phase than your own. We're looking into this, but that's likely a problem we can't solve today. It's still worth entering bug reports for since it's a legitimate way players could get broken on live retail servers when the expansion launches.

Thanks for being patient as we go through this, we tracked down some problems with how certain files are committed to public data containers vs internal local files. This is why your Alpha/Beta/PTR testing is so important - you're playing through the game in a public client, which hits a lot of different areas that we don't see internally (ideally this is the same content, but in terms of installation/updating/streaming it's a different beast.)

Testing is terrific!

None of the Affinities will change the targeting rules that affect you. (WarcraftDevs)

Hunter (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
Hey boss can we get clarification? Will ALL Mech pets be difficult to tame, or just the "Rare" ones Inquireing Gnomes want to know
Currently there are only a few that arent hidden away, we will see how that plays out. (Muffinus)

Mage (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
Invisibility pruned from Mages in #Legion? If yes, why? (Epecially in light of the Arcane PvP talent).
Nope, Invisibility is sticking around. Arcane even gets Greater Invisibility baseline. (WarcraftDevs)

Rogue (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
can outlaw rogues get cheap shot back? playing my rogue in legion alpha feels really terrible without it as an opener
CC is being reduced across the board. Outlaws focus on in-combat CC. Instead of Cheap Shot, they use Bribe, Blind, and Gouge. (WarcraftDevs)

Character / Items
. Is there any chance of reverting the mount size cap? Even a small one? If the answer is NO then just tell me I'm wasting my time
It was partially reverted in 6.2.3 i think? To allow you to still be like 50% bigger. Don't quote me on that number. (Muffinus)

Any chance we can see crystallized fel being purchasable for all the excess valor that we all have now? 40weeks for 2 rings
That's an interesting idea. Thanks for the suggestion! (WarcraftDevs)

PvE
please tell me augment runes are a thing of the past
We haven't made a final decision yet, but we think they worked well as a luxury consumable and market commodity. (WarcraftDevs)

Lore
Has there been a time skip between WoD and Legion? DH says BC was 10 years ago, but Wrath was only 4 years ago?
The Demon hunters in beta have a /silly joke line that shouldn't be taken as canon, if that's what you mean. (DaveKosak)
They also say mention being imprisoned for 10 years in some of the quest text though?
Quest name? (DaveKosak)

UI / Addons
will the new transmog system come with the prelaunch event or at launch of Legion?
In general, systems and UI improvements are tied to the pre-launch patch. (WarcraftDevs)

Things like Confession, Treant Form, Illusion likely learned from tomes. Angels likely triggered by a certain spell. (WarcraftDevs)

Demon Hunter (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
Will DH's GCD be 1 sec or 1.5 sec? Also are there any plans to alter any other classes GCD?
1.5 second base, reduced by haste (similar to most other non-energy melee). (WarcraftDevs)

Paladin (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
holy paladin in legion raiding, stand in melee? Or back with range? Or bounce between the two groups?
Depends on the fight. Sometimes Holy Paladins will prefer to stand with ranged, sometimes with whomever they're healing. (WarcraftDevs)

Rogue (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
Any chance Pistol Shot for Outlaws might see unique animation/unique gun? Gret concept let down by a Vanilla Blunderbuss model
The current art for Pistol Shot in the Legion Alpha is temporary. It will have a new gun and animation. (WarcraftDevs)

Warlock (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
So will aff/destro locks have any form of burst cooldowns other than summon Doomguard/Infernal since dark soul is gone?
There are a few talents that improve burst, and the Doomguard/Infernal are being buffed to deal significantly more damage. (WarcraftDevs)

Artifact Wepaons
Will our artifacts be able to unlock additional relic slots at some point?
Artifacts start with 2 relic slots and unlock a 3rd shortly after reaching 110. We're not planning any additional slots. (WarcraftDevs)

PvP
does this mean tank specs will be viable in PvP also?
We're looking into ways to make tanks fun - both to play as, and to play against - in PvP. It's a tough challenge. (WarcraftDevs)

why not just make racials unavailable for pvp?
We feel racials are an important part of what defines your character, and should come into PvP with you. (WarcraftDevs)

Lore
Mr.Koask could you please clear the situation with Vol'Jin? You said he is warchief and in quests it's Sylvanas! what happened?
If you're checking out the alpha, you're only getting part of the story, none of the intro, and none of the cinematics. Yet! (DaveKosak)

Transmogrification
Rumor from alpha is clothies can unlock cloth transmog but plate cannot. Intended behavior?
Intended. Plate wearers unlock plate, mail wearers unlock mail, etc. Weapons must be equippable by that character. (WarcraftDevs)

If I unlocked the CM armor during MOP on one warlock, if I make another will I be able to XMOG it on him with the new system?
Yep! Any characters of the same class will be able to wear the Challenge Mode sets if you've unlocked them. (WarcraftDevs)
Can we discuss that "Weapons must be equippable" thing for staves/polearms?
I refuse to discuss polearms after "the incident". (Muffinus)

I agree. Looks cool. Shades of Paths of the Titans, down to titan names. (OccupyGStreet)

How do you keep your team motivated when deadlines loom and setbacks start to/have happened? How do you boost morale?
One of the best things for morale is shipping things and seeing it in the hands of players / customers. (OccupyGStreet)
Newbie managers sometimes focus too much on individual feelings during a time of crisis. (OccupyGStreet)
When actually your team may thank you later for being decisive when Shit Gets Real. (OccupyGStreet)
You can focus on the softer aspects of team morale when you have more bandwidth and fewer deadlines looming. (OccupyGStreet)

Hey, GC, how hard is it to take a wow boss mechanic, like Shadow Crash, and make it a player ability? Is it technically hard?
If it's tied to the room geometry (target this x,y coordinate) then it can be hard. A lot of class abilities started with bosses. (OccupyGStreet)

I understand, do u think redesigning classes every xpac is a good idea? I despise having to relearn the specs I play esp. 1/2
I like class change. I was sad in WoD when the direction was minimal change. But having to relearn is the big risk. (OccupyGStreet)

what is a Devs definition of "Balance" equal everything or as close as balanceable?
Depends on devs and projects. Usually it's something like decisions of what / how to play aren't driven by raw power. (OccupyGStreet)

Systems designers distinguish between "balanced" and "balanceable" and focus more on the latter since it's a lot harder. (OccupyGStreet)
how do unbalanceable things form? i.e. by what general mechanism does a system/mechanic become unbalanceable?
Things are balanceable if they have tuning knobs. A switch with on/off lacks tuning knobs. (OccupyGStreet)
An ability that is "kill next target" doesn't scale with target health or power, so you lack an ability to tune it. (OccupyGStreet)

like why make it balancable if you don't then use that work to try achieve balance.
Totally. Balance is the end goal and the most important in the end. We just talk about the hard part which is balanceable. (OccupyGStreet)
Sadly, what isn't balance-able is community perception. Once they believe something is bad, it's hard to change that view.
That's true, but players don't owe use endlessly trying something to see if it's finally fixed yet. (OccupyGStreet)

My point is, it's hard to give everyone the precise experience they are looking for. But that doesn't make it easier on them. (OccupyGStreet)

I grew up playing all the "classic" RTS games of the late 90s/early 00's (AoE, C&C, Starcraft, Warcraft etc.) I have a lot of nostalgia for the genre and I feel like a lot of other people do too. What do you think classic RTS could do, if anything, to make a comeback?
I think you have to ooze charm. I'll mention Age of Empires, not because I think it's the best RTS in every aspect, but it did a great job with the charm that hooked people in...
