Crithto Leaves Blizzard
We're sorry to see Crithto leave and wish him the best in the future!

Fast-forward to today, and I still cannot believe how my life has changed, how I’ve grown as a professional and a person by being a member of the Blizzard family. From my first BlizzCon in 2008, to the orc statue being installed on campus, from the Crithto NPC being added to the game, to seeing the Warcraft film go from being a dream to a reality, my time here has certainly been extremely meaningful.

What is probably the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make was to choose to move on to a new opportunity that was recently offered to me. I’ll get to face new challenges and really push my skills as a relationship builder and communicator, but none of this would be possible if it weren’t for my time and experience here at Blizzard. Candidly speaking, the day before I let my managers know I had decided to leave, I cried . . . a lot more than I should probably admit, but I did.

Blizzard’s games, my teammates, co-workers, and everything about being here and a part of this incredible community for these many years have meant so much to me, I can barely give these genuine emotions enough justice through written words. In a recent email to a close friend, I explained that Blizzard has felt like a “home” to me in the truest sense of the word. And the timing sure made my decision all the more difficult, too, given that my last day will be tomorrow (October 8) and I won’t be able to see some of you at BlizzCon as a Blizzard employee (though I do hope to attend).

I can’t thank all of you enough for your love and support, the weird pug pictures you’ve sent me on Twitter, and for your genuine passion for this game and all things Blizzard. I may be stepping down as “Crithto”, but I will always remain a fellow gamer, and I’m sure we’ll cross paths at some point again in the near future. /Respect, /Hug, /Farewell!

Empowered Apexis Fragments are Battle.net Account-bound, and they upgrade your Baleful gear from ilvl 650 to ilvl 695.

Your touching responses, well wishes, and encouragement mean the world to me. Not only that, but friends of mine outside our world here caught wind of it all, and you moved them to tears as well. And this isn't to inspire more sadness or posts. I just wanted each of you to know how much I appreciate what you've shared, player and co-worker alike. Thank you. Truly, truly, thank you. Assault on the Pit and Draenor Flying
The frustration caused by having to wait for Assault on the Pit is something I've seen a lot of over the past few weeks. I don't have any additional information at this time, but I wanted to let you know that this feedback has been forwarded on. Thanks for the feedback! (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Official Communication
I’m going to try and tackle some of the most recurrent questions and concerns here. Bear with me!

Again I want to reiterate that your feedback does get read. The tricky situation is that replying to a thread with a small “thanks, this has been forwarded on” can then set a false expectation that there will be an answer, or a change to the game, when that post appears out of context somewhere else on the internet.

Likewise, after a while a simple “thanks for the feedback” in response to every thread can begin to feel just as empty as not receiving an answer at all. It may also cause people to feel more neglected than they already are, if their own topics are not replied too. Having a lot of similar replies can even make relevant answers harder to locate on the aforementioned Blue Trackers. Of course, if a topic is particularly prevalent I will endeavour to let you know that it has been heard. (for example)

I’m also not a developer, so I’m not really in a position of speculating or commenting on game design choices where the Blue text effectively causes any response posted to be viewed as Blizzard’s official stance. That being said I will try to chase up on widespread concerns and, any significant information I do get, I will try to relay to you as much as possible. Though I also want any information I provide to be as accurate as possible to avoid potential sources of confusion. This leads into:

To the green - seriously? Timezone difficulties and "permission-to-post" issues?
It’s not really a permissions issue. Of course we want to make sure that everything we post is accurate which can cause delays. Some communications are partially a timezone issue, with the developers being in the US it’s far more likely that any tweets or posts that the developers make, will be during US hours, because that’s when they’re working. Likewise it means that here in Europe, we may have to send e-mails to the developers enquire for information if our schedules don’t overlap.

For all important communications, we are trying to get everything communicated at the same time in all regions via blog posts. If any localisation is needed, then that may delay the process, but the goal is for important communications to be on blogs in all regions within 24 hours.

Yes, this may not have always happened in the past. We’re well aware of that and working on improving.

On that note, let me pitch a question here – would you like for the Updates from @WarcraftDevs thread to be mirrored onto the EU forums so you have better visibility of it?

Eu needs to get the information in all languages at the same time or the world is destroyed.
This isn’t always the case either. While it is true for important announcements and updates, there are smaller, more language-specific, updates from the community that may not be posted in all languages. This is decided on a language by language basis. For example a Hearthstone tournament running in Germany, only being casted in German, would normally only be communicated to our German speaking audience as it’s of more relevance to them.

And I'm simply astounded by your welcome thread and Bashiok's farewell thread, because most of those blues, I've never even seen them here or anywhere for that matter, especially not this year, AND YET - most of them bear the "Community Manager" title.
The Blues you see in those threads are Community Managers that have individual game and languages responsibilities. For example, here in Europe we support 6 games in 5+ different languages; to break that down there is (generally) one Community Manager per language, per game. That means there are a lot of Blues you may never see outside of those types of threads, simply because they are supporting a different game/language.

I have a question; as a community manager surely managing the community of the official site takes precedence over third parties i.e. twitter, youtube, fansites etc. Why is this not the case? If people have feedback to give or questions to ask surely the official forums would be the place they're most likely to come to do so.
I know this isn’t going to be a popular answer, but Twitter, Facebook and YouTube (and probably more to come) are also official channels. These sites may not be directly hosted on Battle.net, but they are still official channels. The World of Warcraft community, as a whole, is very diverse and spread out more than just on the official forums. All feedback is valuable, regardless of where it comes from.

To go back to an earlier point, any important information we try to communicate through the official blogs. The official Twitter and Facebook pages are generally used to highlight fun stuff the community is doing (Cosplay, Machinima, Fan-Art, etc.) as well as direct people to the official blog posts. Again, this is something we’re striving to improve on.

But, and ultimately…

I fully understand that you have all been feeling neglected here on the EU forums and I definitely hear that there are aspects of the game that you’re unhappy with. However, I can’t change what has happened in the past. I can only change what happens going forward. I want to go forward working together with you all, which is why I made my initial post (and this follow-up!) giving you a view of the stuff I do. The main takeaway I wanted to give from that post is that some days (maybe even weeks), I might not post all but that this isn’t because I’m ignoring you. Interacting with the community, championing your feedback and also highlighting all the great content the community makes, are all things that enticed me toward this job – it’s what I aim to do as often as I can! 2015 European Regional Finals Disqualifications
Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

In both cases, the disqualified players were found to have been violating the Terms of Service of World of Warcraft. According to our Tournament Rules, players’ accounts must remain in good standing for the entirety of the 2015 WoW Arena World Championship. As these players’ accounts had been suspended, they were no longer in good standing, and thus disqualified from the tournament.

We have performed a thorough investigation of the accounts in question, and have found overwhelming evidence indicating that both players were indeed participating in activities that rightfully resulted in their accounts being suspended. Blizzard does not publicly share details of actions taken against specific accounts, but offenses that typically result in suspension include: exploiting game mechanics, buying or selling accounts, playing another person’s account for advantage (boosting), and/or collusion with opponents.

In both cases, we should have taken action much sooner, and regret that these players were not informed of their disqualified status prior to the event.

We are working to improve our processes to prevent situations like this from happening again, and ensure that ineligible players are properly disqualified before tournament play commences.

Rob Pardo Interview
Rob Pardo was at Unite this year and gave an interview to gamesindustry.biz, with a little bit of World of Warcraft talk.

  • Adding obstacles that have the right amount of frustration and challenge is important so that when the player overcomes them, it feels like a huge accomplishment or achievement.
  • In the quest to make World of Warcraft more accessible, understandable, and intuitive, some of the sharp edges were shaved away.
  • Those sharp edges were sometimes part of what made the game compelling, as games aren't really supposed to be easy at all times.
  • Everything in game design is about trade-offs. You can't make a game that everyone will love.
  • The initial design for WoW was trying to get players that enjoyed Blizzard games to try a MMO.
  • There was debate about putting awesome content, encounters, and stories in dungeons, as there were players that enjoyed playing by themselves and didn't want to group up for dungeons.
  • The choice not to make a single player version of dungeons was intentional, as making it more accessible would cause players that love dungeons to love them less.
  • Hearthstone was an experiment that looked at making a Blizzard quality game with a smaller team and it worked out well.
  • Pardo is closer towards the end of his sabbatical than the beginning.

Rob Pardo - Games With Friends
Rob Pardo was at Unite this year and gave a short presentation during the keynote.

History
  • Dungeons and Dragons had a big impact on him as a game designer. It had a social storytelling experience that required a team.
  • Next he played some fighter games, such as Karate Champ.
  • Deathmatch games such as Doom came next, introducing new concepts. They were competitive games that you could play for a long time and leaderboards.
  • Warcraft II was the next game that had a big impact, as it was the first game he remembers playing with teams.
  • Next came online worlds like Ultima Online. Pardo saw people killing birds, collecting feathers, and making arrows to kill more birds, which looked boring. He then played the game and walked into the city where there were lots of players talking and interacting.
  • Everquest took the online world concept and added challenges that required a deep level of commitment, teamwork, and guilds, resulting in deep and long lasting friendships.
  • When looking at the games he played up to this point, he liked them all pretty equally, but the games with multiplayer had more playtime.

Multiplayer Games
  • Multiplayer makes a game very compelling, as they have competition, co-operation, friendships, community, and they are unique compared to other entertainment mediums.
  • There are other types of entertainment that are older than games, such as reading, movies, TV, music, and sports.
  • Movies and TV allow you to have a deeper emotional connection to the characters and story, as well as visualize things more vividly than books.
  • Sports is the closest of the other mediums to multiplayer games. If you actually compete, it gives you a lot of the same elements, but most people are spectators and consider it an entertainment medium. People love to get invested in their teams and watch them play.
  • Making multiplayer games is challenging, but it is worth it. Multiplayer makes games a unique medium compared to the others.
  • Multiplayer may also be inevitable, as more and more of the world is coming online.
  • The other games we play outside of digital games (board games, card games, drinking games) are almost all social games. In the gaming industry, it is the opposite, with most games not having multiplayer.
  • Multiplayer games allow you to explore friendships
    • Who can you depend on? - If someone gets awesome loot today, will they show up for the same boss tomorrow to help you?
    • What are they good at? - If you are playing a game like League of Legends, what roles are your friends good at?
    • Who picks you up when you are down? - When Pardo was playing Everquest, he teleported into a dungeon where he was instantly killed. This resulted in losing experience, his level up, and all of his stuff ended up on the ground. He ended up naked and unable to teleport back. His friends went to the dungeon with him and helped him get his gear back.
    • Are they good winners / losers? - Is someone flipping the table just because you beat them in a game?
    • Conversation during a shared activity - In some games, people log on just to chat with their guild. You can't do that at a music festival or during a movie.
    • Meeting new friends or a spouse - A decent number of people meet their spouse or long time friends in a multiplayer game.

Multiplayer Problems
  • Why aren't developers making more multiplayer games?
    • Too Niche? - There are lots of multiplayer games in the list of top grossing games of all times. Players often play them for years, allowing them to be very lucrative for the people that make them.
    • Too Expensive? - There is some truth to that, as those top grossing games often involve a lot of art resources. Adding multiplayer to games doesn't have to be expensive though. There are lots of smaller multiplayer games that are fun, interesting, and engaging.
    • Too Hard? - Accommodating lots of players and how they interact in a multiplayer game does have some challenges.
      • Networking and server code is hard, as is finding developers to work on it, as other big non-gaming companies want to hire those same people.
      • You need a critical mass of players if you want to have matchmaking that works well.
      • Game balance is also very important, as it enables your game to last for months or years.
      • Adding multiplayer means more features, such as chat and friends.
  • Watercooler Problem - You may meet someone that plays the same game as you and want to play together, but there are problems:
    • Skill gap - One of the players might have been playing the game a lot longer, resulting in a big skill gap.
    • Different levels - In an MMO, the players might not be the same level, resulting in gameplay that isn't fun for both players.
    • Different progression - You may be at different points in the story or quest lines, meaning that you can't play together.
    • Different servers - In games with multiple servers, you may not be on the same server as the other player.
    • Some of these problems existed (and still exist) in WoW and other Blizzard games.
    • Some games have solved these problems, such as Rock Band.

Future of Multiplayer
  • Play with your kids - There aren't a lot of great games you can play with your kids right now.
  • E-sports becoming more relevant - It may not be too long until e-sports are on ESPN and not ESPN2.
  • Device agnostic games - Interaction with PC-based MMOs on your mobile device.
  • Crossing national and language barriers - Gamers are worldwide and want to play together, especially in competitive games.
  • Virtual Reality is coming

Patch 6.2.3 will be making its way onto the PTR soon, and we wanted to provide you with some insights on what it has in store.

We’ve made no secret of our desire to expand the role and importance of dungeons in World of Warcraft as we move full speed ahead toward Legion. We look forward to sharing more of our plans in that regard during BlizzCon 2015 next month. At the same time, we’ve heard from many players that they wanted more reasons to run dungeons in Warlords, so we’re pleased to announce this small patch, which is focused on reinforcing the reward systems around our existing dungeons as well as expanding the scope of the Timewalking feature that we introduced in patch 6.2.

Timewalk With Me: New Timewalking Dungeons
Get ready to go back in time to experience six iconic dungeons from Cataclysm with this new Timewalking bonus event. You’ll be able to face the foes within Grim Batol, Stonecore, Lost City of Tol’vir, The Vortex Pinnacle, Throne of Tides, and End Time once more and reap the treasures within.

To round out our Timewalking journey, we’ll also be adding the Pit of Saron to the Wrath of the Lich King Timewalking bonus event and the Magister’s Terrace to the Burning Crusade Timewalking bonus event.

Lest we forget, there’s just one more bit of news that’s bound to draw you into the vortex to do a little Timewalking. Players will now have a chance to loot a rare Infinite Timereaver mount from any Timewalking boss.

Developer Insights
One of the most common requests we’ve heard ever since introducing Timewalking was for there to be some way to obtain an Infinite Dragonflight mount, since it’d fit perfectly with the theme of time manipulation, aside from being just plain cool-looking. We agree. Inspired by Murozond, the final boss of the End Time dungeon that is included in the Cataclysm Timewalking rotation, the Infinite Timereaver will be a rare drop from any dungeon boss during all of the Timewalking events.

Cross-Realm Mythic Raiding
With the patch we’ll also be introducing Cross-Realm Mythic Raiding. You’ll now be able to join with friends, fill that one last spot, or have an easier time recruiting to backfill missing raid slots, allowing you to take on some of the most difficult encounters in Warlords of Draenor.

Valor for the Valorous
With the patch we’ll be bringing back Valor as a currency. You’ll will be able earn Valor once more by taking part in Heroic and Mythic Dungeons, from various Bonus Events, and via the first run through Raid Finder each week. To upgrade, visit your friendly neighborhood ethereal to upgrade gear up to five item levels at a time, up to two times per piece of gear.

Developer Insights
Dungeon content shines when its difficulty is appropriate to players’ power level, so Mythic dungeons will be the most lucrative source of Valor for players who have items from Tanaan or Hellfire Citadel. For those who are still gearing up to tackle Mythic dungeons, or who prefer to use queued matchmaking, Raid Finder wings and the first Heroic dungeon each day will also provide Valor, as will most of Seer Kazal’s weekly event quests. Ethereal Voidbinders have made their way through time and space to Stormshield and Warspear, as well as returning to Orgrimmar and Stormwind, to allow players to use this Valor to upgrade their gear by up to 10 item levels. We decided to go with item upgrades rather than a Valor vendor because item upgrades offer power that complements items from other sources rather than competing with them.

Gift of the Grove Warden
Soon, players who dare to face the fearsome might of Archimonde will receive an added bonus. For a limited time, defeating Archimonde on Heroic difficulty or higher will reward players with a mysterious fragment of dark power that begins a quest. When you bring this fragment to the druids of Moonglade, you’ll learn a little more about what’s in store for Azeroth, and the druids will give you a majestic Grove Warden mount in thanks for your efforts. This quest won’t be available forever—our current plan is to retire the quest in an update some time before Legion’s launch, so grab some friends and head to Hellfire Citadel while you can.

More Bigger Better: Item Rewards
We’re expanding the range of item quality for players within Mythic Dungeons and Tanaan Jungle. Players who take part in Mythic Dungeons will have a chance to gain items up to item level 725, and players who receive Baleful items will now have a chance to gain items up to item level 695. Players in Mythic Dungeons will also now have a chance to loot a new Heirloom Trinket that will scale to level 110.

Developer Insights
Running a dungeon is a bit more exciting when there’s a chance you might get a direct item upgrade, versus simply earning a predictable amount of currency per run. Thus, we’re also expanding the power of Warforged items in Mythic dungeons—rather than a static +20 item level bonus when a Mythic dungeon item is Warforged, there will be a chance for even greater increases in power. The very luckiest players might even obtain item level 725 versions of the dungeon drops, with increasingly better odds of 720, 715, and so forth, fully spanning the range from 685 to 725 in five item-level increments. We’re also applying this system to Baleful items from Tanaan itself, which can now range in quality from item level 655 all the way to 695. Raiding, crafting, and PvP will remain the most reliable sources of the best gear available, but we’d like to create the chance for surprise when you’re adventuring out in the world or in dungeons.

Arena Season 3
We’re also preparing to end Warlords Arena Season 2 and transition to Warlords Arena Season 3. We’ll have more details to share on this transition between seasons and the distribution of rewards in the near future.

Developer Insights
With Arena Season 3 we’ll be introducing new gear, including Warmongering Aspirant gear at PvP item level 715, Warmongering Combatant gear at 730, and Warmongering Gladiator gear at 740.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the complete patch, 6.2.3 notes and we’ll look forward to seeing you on the Public Test Realm.

The virtual aisles are loaded with new items debuting at the show, along with some BlizzCon classics—visit the BlizzCon section of the Gear Store to check out what our master crafters have worked up.

To access the BlizzCon sale, simply head to the Blizzard Gear Store (gear.blizzard.com), and log in using the Battle.net account you used to purchase your Virtual Ticket. Each of this year’s BlizzCon-premiere products will be marked with a BlizzCon logo.

If you’re attending BlizzCon in person, use the account on which you redeemed the BlizzCon Digital Bonuses code sent to you via email earlier this year. If a friend bought your ticket for you, ask them for your code—remember, it also grants you a Virtual Ticket and this year’s in-game goodies—and head to www.battle.net/code to redeem it.

Supplies are limited, so if you spot anything you like, make sure to order early. All orders will be shipped upon receipt—so the sooner you order, the faster you’ll get your BlizzCon swag. Keep in mind that orders are shipped from the United States, so international shipping rates may apply. We’ll also be adding new items once BlizzCon gets underway on November 6, so be sure to check back in then.

Happy hunting!

GMs Appearing in Game
This is a request we see crop-up from time to time. While I do appreciate that it sounds cool for a Game Master (GM) to appear in a capital city and spawn something, this would also be a very disruptive event that could ruin the gameplay experience for others. It would also somehwat break the immersion of the game if Hydross, for example, suddenly appeared in Stormwind. There is also only a finite amount of times such an event can be done before it starts being perceived as an annoyance, or loses its significance.

This is why such events are normally used to celebrate the end of Beta and the shut-down of the Beta servers; a fun once-off event that doesn't affect the live Realms in any form, but signifies the destruction of the Beta world and makes for some cool videos and screenshots. Patch 6.2.3 - Earning Valor
Blizzard released some more details on the Valor coming in Patch 6.2.3 today. It looks like players will be able to earn up to 4875 Valor per week.
Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

  • Upgrading an item costs 250 Valor for +5 item levels.
  • Hellfire Citadel items, Dungeon loot, Baleful items, and crafted items can each be upgraded twice, costing a total of 500 Valor for +10 item levels.
  • There is no hard weekly cap on Valor, but the sources of Valor are inherently not infinitely repeatable.
  • Valor can be earned in the following ways:
    • Mythic Dungeon (Valor awarded with dungeon completion, once per dungeon per week) – 300 Valor Points
    • Complete the weekly Event quest from Seer Kazal (Pet Battle Event excluded) – 500 Valor Points
    • Heroic Dungeon (complete your first random Heroic of the day) – 100 Valor Points
    • Raid Finder wing (once per week per wing) – 150 Valor Points for Hellfire Citadel wings, 75 Valor Points for Highmaul and Blackrock Foundry wings

If you have any further questions on this, feel free to ask them here.

Please note: On the current PTR, Mythic Dungeons are awarding only 150 Valor Points. This will be fixed to the intended value of 300.

Does this include the PvP events? So you win 10 skirmishes and get 500 CP and 500 VP?
Yes.

Why is the Pet Battle event excluded, but not the PvP events?
The Pet Battle challenge is excluded because it and pet battling are account-wide.

A hard cap on earning Valor (or any currency) essentially sets a weekly benchmark, and falling short of that benchmark leaves you feeling like you've left something on the table. If we artificially cap earning at 1000/week, then we're saying it takes ~8 weeks to fully upgrade your gear, assuming "maximum" effort each week. If you miss a week, then you're a week "behind." If you're busy, or sick, or just don't feel like it, and you fall a bit short of the cap one week, then you are delaying completion by precisely that amount. The existence of the cap makes the whole thing feel more mandatory in a sense, with motivation level then plummeting the moment you hit that weekly cap. Despite all these reasons, sometimes we do need caps as a pacing mechanism, particularly early in an expansion or where the impact on player power is massive (e.g. buying Conquest gear in a new arena season).

Without a cap, there's an inherent diminishing return curve at play. You can start off doing the most efficient and engaging activities first, until you've exhausted those, leaving you with activities that are progressively less efficient and/or less suited to your playstyle preferences, combined with the fact that you also inherently are exhausting your free time as you go, with your remaining time presumably becoming more valuable as it dwindles. At some point, you generally hit a threshold where the reward for the next incremental activity no longer seems worth the time investment required, and you're done for the week. For many people, that threshold will be reached at lower than 1000 VP per week, and their experience is no different whether or not there's a cap. For others, that threshold will be reached at a point above 1000 VP, and the lack of a cap gives them the freedom to decide when they're done rather than having it dictated to them. Some will benefit from the fact that they're allowed to convert a weekend of free time into a bunch of Valor to make up for that week when they were busy or traveling, coming out even or ahead rather than being permanently "behind" due to a cap.

(The particular nature of Valor upgrades also adds another element of diminishing returns - your first 2k Valor will likely go into your weapons and trinkets. After that, every additional point of Valor you earn is progressively less impactful as you work your way down from chest/helm, to gloves, to bracers.)

In this case, we opted for the design that offers more freedom to select the sources of Valor that most suit your preferred playstyle, goals, and available time. If you're into Mythic dungeons, then Mythic dungeons are going to be by far the most lucrative source of Valor, and should let you cover your needs quickly. But for players who don't want to run Mythic dungeons, queued alternatives (such as Heroics and Raid Finder) allow for a way to still earn Valor.

I understand the sense of obligation to maximize performance in a competitive raid environment, but the game asks competitive raiders to make those choices constantly: do you craft every upgrade at the first opportunity, use the best gems in items you might replace soon, use the best food or Augment Runes on every pull, keep running lower difficulties on the off-chance of a Warforged/socketed perfect drop that could be an upgrade, keep up with multiple specs or alts to allow you to optimize for specific encounters, and so forth?

Virtually everyone draws a line somehow and compromises in most of these areas, making a judgment about the point at which further expense (whether of gold, or time, or effort) is no longer worth the benefit. This system presents another one of those choices. The need to "save players from themselves" is a familiar refrain - but past experience has shown that people are better at managing their schedules and gameplay choices than many of the comments in this thread would suggest.

And what about people like me whos preferred playstyle is to do organized Raiding? Why did you ignore the one question that's plastered all over this thread: why does Normal/Heroic/Mythic HFC not reward Valor?
The focus of the patch is on dungeon content. Raid Finder was included as a source to add a few more options for Group Finder queuing, and if getting a few well-geared tanks and healers to hop back into Raid Finder improves queues a bit for the core Raid Finder audience, that's not the worst thing in the world. But if you hate Raid Finder, there are literally thousands of Valor available weekly without setting foot in Raid Finder.

Part of the point is to provide a reason to revisit content that you may not have had much reason to do in a while, rather than just providing an extra reward for continuing your existing routine.

  • Please keep your question brief and to the point. These will need to fit on a large index card.
  • With so many questions, we won’t be able to ask them all, but we’ll be doing the best we can.
  • Make sure you’re asking a question versus making a statement.

Blizzcon - Engineering Panel Update
One final update on the fate of the Engineering Panel that turned out not to be a panel.

Overwatch Beta to Include Battle.net Voice Chat
Blizzard announced the purpose of the Battle.Net Voice Chat that we mentioned a few days ago.

We're in the process of working in some slight updates to Battle.net in preparation for the upcoming Overwatch beta test, and wanted to give you the heads up. This update will lay the foundation for us to test voice chat functionality within the Overwatch beta.

We're excited for players to give this feature a try during the Overwatch beta and look forward to your feedback. Further details on our voice chat plans for Battle.net will be released further down the road, but for now, please see the FAQ below.

Q: If I'm not in the Overwatch beta test, can I still test voice chat?
A: Battle.net voice chat will only be available for testing in the Overwatch beta. Players are welcome to sign up for the beta here.

Q: Will voice chat support other Blizzard games as well? If so, when?
A: With voice chat still in its early development and testing stages, it's too early to say which Blizzard games will be supported and when.

Q: How will voice chat work in the Overwatch beta test?
A: We'll have further details to share once the beta begins.

Q: Should I see some sort of change with my Battle.net desktop app?
A: No, this is just be an addition to the app's DLLs.

Former CEO of ESPN and the NFL Network Steve Bornstein will serve as the division's Chairman and Mike Sepso, who was most recently a co-founder and president of Major League Gaming (MLG), will serve as its Senior Vice President.

"Celebrating our players and their unique skill, dedication and commitment is the essence of our esports initiatives," said Bobby Kotick, Chief Executive Officer of Activision Blizzard. "Blizzard Entertainment and Activision Publishing have been leaders in the development of esports. With that leadership, our strong franchises, our deep history and experience in esports, and now two additional industry leaders, we intend to further enhance our efforts and make certain this remains an important growth driver for Activision Blizzard."

Kotick added, "There are no better leaders for this new initiative than Steve and Mike. Steve has unparalleled experience in creating a sports network powerhouse and his groundbreaking leadership at ESPN and the NFL Network shaped how the whole world experiences sports. Mike's entrepreneurial vision helped make ‘esports' a household word and he is uniquely positioned to take the experience to the next level."

"Last year, Activision Blizzard created entertainment that was viewed and played by over 150 million people for more than 13 billion hours," said Steve Bornstein, Chairman of the new division and former CEO of ESPN and the NFL Network. "I believe esports will rival the biggest traditional sports leagues in terms of future opportunities, and between advertising, ticket sales, licensing, sponsorships and merchandising, there are tremendous growth areas for this nascent industry. I'm excited to help Activision Blizzard further its leadership position in esports."

"As a member of the esports community for over 12 years, I couldn't be more excited for the future of the sport. I am confident that the company's industry-leading content will capture the many opportunities we have to entertain and celebrate our players," said Mike Sepso, Senior Vice President for Activision Blizzard. "Activision Blizzard is uniquely positioned to give millions of fans around the world what they want, and I'm excited to help support this community in a way that honors its history."

Activision Blizzard has a rich history in esports:

  • Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft® was the early pioneer in large-scale mainstream, televised esports, since the 1990s.
  • Blizzard Entertainment has many of the world's biggest and most beloved esports competitions. This year's BlizzCon® event will take place November 6-7 in Anaheim, Calif. and will feature the global finals for StarCraft® II, World of Warcraft®, Heroes of the Storm™ and Hearthstone®. Players have been competing for more than $4 million in prizes across Road to BlizzCon tournaments.
  • Earlier this year, Blizzard Entertainment launched Heroes of the Dorm™, the first collegiate esports event to be televised on ESPN2. More than 6,000 collegiate players, representing 460-plus schools, competed in the tournament with the winning team from UC Berkeley securing the grand prize of fully-paid tuition for each of its members.
  • Activision Publishing hosts the annual Call of Duty Championship. Call of Duty® is the top console esports franchise in the world.
  • On September 24, 2015, Activision Publishing announced the creation of the Call of Duty® World League, which provides a $3 million prize pool to professional and amateur players.
  • Since its launch, Destiny has become the most watched console game on Twitch.

Submit Questions for the Developers
We have our first interview in a long time coming up at Blizzcon and as always, we want to let the community ask questions! This time our interview will be covering the design of Legion.

If you have any questions you think we should ask, be sure to add them to the comments of the linked post for consideration. We will pick the best questions and add them to our list!

  • Don't post any questions in the comments of this news post. Use the linked topic instead.
  • These should be questions about Legion, not Warlords of Draenor.
  • No class specific questions please. This includes things like balance between the different healing/tank/DPS classes and specs.
  • Keep questions reasonably short.

why don't you let us use the (repair) mount in both Socrethar and Tyrant arenas?
In general, you can only mount outdoors – those areas both are fully enclosed. Engineers can drop Jeeves wherever, of course. (WarcraftDevs)

So what did folks who played and watched think of 6v6? (holinka)
6v6 format works well, enjoyable to watch and looks like great fun to play. Few thoughts though... large buff icons on name plates is annoying, especially when you have players clumped up. possibly allow BL/TW in 6v6, hard for loser to comeback and this should help without being OP. possibly making some maps that suit 6v6, would be awesome.
Thank you for your thoughts. (holinka)
I like objective based better than arena for sure. Matches can get decided a little early on control points however.
Yea control point maps play no better with 6 than they do with 10 sadly (holinka)

Have you considered 4v4?i mean why did you missed the 4s as bracket i can't see it being more unbalanced than 2s but can be fun tho
2 healers 2 dps. yuck (holinka)

Life Tap is surrounded by what seems to be fel energy, so my Q is: Is fel power converted life force?

For example there is a global shortage of effects artists right now. We just can't hire as many as we need. (OccupyGStreet)
I'll throw out this Q to everyone: What games have you played for a long time that didn't recycle or reuse levels, dungeons, etc.? (OccupyGStreet)
In other words, is it even possible for a studio to produce content faster than players can consume it? (OccupyGStreet)

Computers - Setup of the Month
Each month or so we will post a couple of hardware setups for those of you who are thinking of upgrading their computer!

This month
The current SSD prices are fairly flat right now, with most SSDs under $0.50 per gigabyte when on sale.

New CPUs from Intel and GPUs from AMD are here, but they aren't huge improvements over the previous generation.

Depending on how much you want to overclock, you may need to spend a bit more for a better CPU cooler like the NH-D14.

Unless you are doing a lot of video rendering or streaming, you do not need the 6700K and should spend that money elsewhere.

Make sure to keep your AMD and Nvidia drivers up to date.

World of Warcraft has a lot of different types of players, some choose to just focus on a handful of characters and work to getting them to max level and beyond, while others play a large number of characters across multiple realms but may get hardly any to max level. We have to strike a fine balance in this regard as no playstyle is any less "valid." No matter which period of inactivity we choose to go for, it will always be too long for someone, and too short for someone else. Ultimately we landed on our current policy which you can see at:

Overwatch Beta FAQ

A. To opt into the beta, visit your Beta Profile Settings page in Account Management, check the "Overwatch" box under "Beta Tests I'm Interested In," and then click "Update Preferences." Alternatively, you can also sign up by clicking here.

Please note that opting in will not guarantee you access to the Closed Beta.

Q. How are Closed Beta participants selected?
A. Beta testers are chosen based on many factors, including your Battle.net region, when you signed up, your computer hardware specifications, and an element of luck. We are also inviting select journalists and community contributors from around the world on a case-by-case basis.

Q. How will I know if I'm selected to participate in the Closed Beta?
A. If you are selected to participate in the Closed Beta, you will receive an invite via email. Invites will always be sent to the email address associated with your Battle.net account.

To help avoid phishing attempts, if you believe you've received an invite, it's best to refrain from clicking on any links in the email(s) you receive. Instead, you can verify that your account has been granted a Closed Beta license in Battle.net Account Management.

Q. Will there be any other ways to get into the Closed Beta besides opting-in?
A. Not at this time. Also, please note that Overwatch beta keys do not exist. Access to the Closed Beta will be provided solely through account flagging.

Q. How many players do you plan to invite to the Closed Beta?
A. The number of players we invite will be largely based on our testing needs. We also want to make sure the game’s matchmaking system remains in a relatively healthy place throughout this phase of testing. As a result, if we determine we need more players to test new features or keep matches running smoothly, we’ll continue to add people to the Closed Beta from our opt-in pool.

Q. What gameplay regions is the Closed Beta available in?
A. The Closed Beta is currently available in the Americas and Europe gameplay regions. We have plans to bring the beta to our Asia gameplay region at a later date. For more information on which countries are associated with each of our gameplay regions, click here.

Game performance for players in some regions, such as Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America may be sub-optimal during the beta. If you experience issues with gameplay like high latency, excessive loading times, or long matchmaking queues, please be sure to post in our beta forums so that we can work to make improvements.

Q. What languages are supported in the Closed Beta?
A.The Closed Beta currently supports 10 languages: English, French, German, Castilian Spanish, Polish, Italian, Russian, Latin American Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. Localization is not yet complete for all languages, however, so some content may still appear in English during the beta.

Q. If I get invited to the Closed Beta, can I stream or create content about the game?
A. Absolutely! There is no non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for the Closed Beta. You are encouraged to take screenshots, livestream your play sessions, record feedback videos—whatever your heart desires. The game is still a work in progress, though, so we appreciate your understanding when you encounter bugs, graphical errors, or other issues.

Q. Can I run tournaments with a prize pool during the Closed Beta?
A. Yes! You are welcome to run tournaments (with or without prize pools) during the Closed Beta. However, given the size and scope of this phase of beta, we will not be issuing tournament licenses for large-scale events with prize pools over $10k. For smaller events, please review our Community Tournament Guidelines before you begin planning to make sure your community tournament is in compliance.

If you would like to begin discussing your tournament plans for after game launch, or have any other questions, feel free to reach out to tourneyinfo@blizzard.com any time.

Q. How long will the Closed Beta last?
A. This phase of the Closed Beta will conclude before the end of the year. We don't have an exact date to share at this time, but we'll be sure to provide testers with advanced notice.

Q. Will any progress I make during the Closed Beta carry over to the live game?
A. No. We've no plans at this time for your activity during the Closed Beta to carry over.

Q. If I don't get into the Closed Beta, am I guaranteed access to a Beta Test Weekend?
A. No. While Beta Test Weekends will include a much larger number of players than Closed Beta, they will also be invite-only. You'll need to opt-in to the Overwatch beta to be eligible.

Q. How do I opt-in to the Beta Test Weekends?
A. There is no special opt-in process for Beta Test Weekends. If you opted-in for the beta, you're all set!

As a reminder: To opt into the beta, visit your Beta Profile Settings page in Account Management, check the "Overwatch" box under "Beta Tests I'm Interested In," and then click "Update Preferences." Alternatively, you can also sign up by clicking here.
Again, please note that opting in will not guarantee you access to a Beta Test Weekend.

Q. What are the system requirements for the Closed Beta?
A. See below!

Minimum (targeting 30fps):
  • Operating system: Windows® Vista/7/ 8/10 64-bit (latest Service Pack)
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i3 or AMD Phenom™ X3 865
  • Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460, ATI Radeon™ HD 4850, or Intel® HD Graphics 4400
  • Memory: 768 MB VRAM, 4 GB System RAM
  • Storage: 7200 RPM with 5 GB available HD space

Recommended (targeting 60fps on Medium settings):
  • Operating system: Windows® Vista/7/ 8/10 64-bit (latest Service Pack)
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i5 or AMD Phenom™ II X3, 2.8 GHz
  • Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 660 or ATI Radeon™ HD 7950
  • Memory: 2 GB VRAM, 6 GB System RAM
  • Storage: 7200 RPM with 5 GB available HD space

For the best performance, please be sure to update to the latest drivers available for your graphics card.

Due to potential changes, the system requirements for this game may change over time.

Q. Will Mac users be able to participate in the beta?
A. We're developing Overwatch for Windows-based PCs only, so a Mac-specific beta will not be provided.

Q. What is the business model for Overwatch?
A. We have not announced the business model for Overwatch at this time.

Q. When will the game be released?
A. We have not announced the release date for Overwatch at this time.

The Legion website was updated to add a Pre-Purchase button today, linking to a Battle.Net Shop page for Legion Digital Deluxe. The shop page gave an error rather than product information and the Pre-Purchase button was removed about an hour later, so it looks like it was only testing.

Digital deluxe details haven't been announced yet, but we can look at Warlords Digital Deluxe as an example. We know Collector's Edition will get the Illidari Felstalker mount and the similar looking pet: Nibbles.

I'm not sure anyone should be 'suffering' through anything. If you're not enjoying yourself with something, perhaps others can direct you toward something in game you can enjoy. I can understand wanting to get to the next new thing. It's always exciting to get to experience something completely new, but new takes time. 6.2.3 will have some nice additions and changes (as we've already announced) so hopefully you'll get something out of it when it releases. Feel free to test things out on the PTR too.

Why can't we get a blue post on relevant things? I would love to hear some real reasons for why WoD patches were trash and not the time old excuse that "it just didn't work out" And there is nothing new here...Just reworked systems and bosses from other expansions
You're not really asking a question. You want us to agree "x was trash." We're just not going to do that. We do however try to make sure we're taking feedback and game experiences (on many fronts) to note so that we can continue to find ways to improve on the game.

We're not always going to agree on what that means, but we'll keep trying to find ways to give people fun experiences within the game.

We've seen a lot of these, "just admit" posts. They're not questions. They're statements of opinion that we take note of, just like we take note of those that say, "we are enjoying x." We do our best to keep learning and growing whether you believe it's the 'right path' or not is just a matter of preference. That doesn't stop our bid to do better where we can as a goal for the overall health of the game. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

That works for Metroid almost out of tradition, but it can be really annoying if done poorly. "Come back here in 30 hours when you have the ladder to reach this shortish ledge!"

By the way, the most common answers I got for that question (which I originally posed on twitter at ‎@occupygstreet):
-- Lots of difficulty levels so you keep running the same content over and over... kind of.
-- Procedurally generated content (e.g. random maps or monsters).
-- Player generated content through a robust tool system.

Are the skills required for cooperation in LoL, or maybe those in WoW, useful in the 'real world'? That is, winning in arenas in WoW might still require knowing good players who will group with you, but once a match has started, cooperation is just mechanical, not social. In LoL, random matching
The skills that are most applicable are making quick judgment calls with limited time and information, getting people (total strangers even) to see your point of view and rally around a strategy, keeping morale up in the face of tough news, and communicating succinctly.
I have interviewed and hired people because their experience leading e.g. a large raiding guild spoke of their leadership potential.

Watch the WoW Arena World Championship During BlizzCon Opening Week
Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)
This weekend, the final battles of the World of Warcraft Arena World Championship get underway at BlizzCon Opening Week. We've gathered eight of the best teams from around the world who will fight for their share of a $250,000 prize pool and the title of BlizzCon 2015 Arena champions.

The Opening Week action begins at 1:30 p.m. PDT on Friday, October 30, and continues at that same time on Saturday, October 31. Be sure to tune in to our free live stream on the official BlizzCon website.

Of the eight teams competing at Opening Week, only six will advance to play at BlizzCon 2015 the following week. Let's take a closer look at each of our competitors:

SK Gaming – Europe
SK Gaming (formerly known as Solari Gaming Blue) took first place at the European Road to BlizzCon event in an epic 5-game series against Skill Capped EU. Their presence at BlizzCon 2015 should come as no surprise, as all of these players have repeatedly proven themselves to be among the best of the best in the World of Warcraft Arena.

Skill Capped EU – Europe
Although they were defeated by SK Gaming in the Grand Finals at the European Road to BlizzCon, Skill Capped EU (formerly known as Solari Gaming Red) had a tremendous run throughout the tournament. Now, with Opening Week on the horizon, this team is looking to come back swinging and take the championship title at BlizzCon 2015.

Solari Gaming – Europe
Solari Gaming is quite possibly the team with the most to prove in this year's WoW Arena World Championship. At the European Road to BlizzCon (under the name Solari Gaming Yellow) they faced off against Three Languages One Team for the third and final spot at BlizzCon . . . and lost. However, they caught a lucky break after Three Languages One Team was unable to travel to BlizzCon. How will Solari Gaming Yellow make use of their second chance at glory?

Cloud9 – North America
This team qualified for BlizzCon 2015 under the name Juveniles—and with less major tournament experience than several of the other teams, and only three members on their roster, many considered them to be the underdogs. However, after taking first place at the Americas Regionals, that all changed, as Cloud9 proved themselves as one of the strongest RMDs (Rogue/Mage/Druid combo) in the world.

Tempo Storm – North America
It should be no surprise to see these guys at BlizzCon. Elite, Pikaboo, and Jahmilli have repeatedly shown to be one of the strongest teams in online tournaments over the past couple of years, and with Starship filling out their roster, they were nearly unstoppable at the Americas Regionals. Now Tempo Storm is out to prove that they have what it takes to be the BlizzCon 2015 champions.

FollowEsports.com – North America
FollowEsports.com's path to BlizzCon 2015 was rocky at best. They were the last of the six North American teams to qualify for the Americas Regionals, where they came in third place, narrowly beating out Luminosity. However, they've proven time and again that they can’t be kept down. Will this be their time to shine?

Do It For Fun – Korea
Yeonyeon and Coding competed as members of team Push Push at BlizzCon 2014 and fought their way past some incredibly strong competitors to advance to the semifinals. Now, with Jyottu and Mudyane joining them, Do It For Fun is here for another shot at that first place prize and the title of BlizzCon champions.

Original Gangstarr – China
Original Gangstarr is composed of an all-star lineup from China. XaioJie, Han BaiChuan, and Darkarchonyo have all qualified for BlizzCon before, and YiYang won the Chinese championship in 2014. Although they may not be as well-known as some of the other teams, these players should absolutely not be underestimated.

Prize Pool
This year's Arena World Championship features an epic $250,000 prize pool, which will distributed to each team based on their standings as follows:
  • 1st place team: $120,000
  • 2nd place team: $50,000
  • 3rd–4th: $20,000
  • 5th–6th: $12,000
  • 7th–8th: $8,000

Commentators & Analysts
We'll be joined once again by our seasoned lineup of shoutcasters and analysts:
  • Sid 'Supatease' Compston
  • Elliott 'Venruki' Venczel
  • Jared 'vhell' Coulston
  • Josh 'Lore' Allen
  • Jackson 'Bajheera' Bliton

Additional Information
Remember, the battle begins at 1:30 p.m. PDT on Friday, October 30, and you can tune in live at BlizzCon.com. For more information, check out the links below:
