Mike Morhaime Interviews - Project Titan and Starcraft Ghost
Mike Morhaime, co-founder and former President of Blizzard Entertainment, has been discussing his time at Blizzard in a series of recent interviews. Most recently, he talked with VG247 about the canceled MMO project, code-named Titan.

  • Titan was canceled because Blizzard failed to control the scope of the project.
  • They looked at Titan as a sequel to World of Warcraft, a next-generation MMO.
  • Many of their senior developers were put on project Titan.
  • The game was very ambitious taking place in a universe focused on hystorical myth, with time travel mechanics.
  • Titan would have been a subscription-based MMO had it been released.
  • The engine for the game never reached the level of where it needed to be, and the developer staff said it wasn't working.
  • They asked the team to come up with one or two ideas they could focus on, it could be anything they wanted.
  • Overwatch was the result of the Titan team's brainstorming and became the focus of their team.

Mike Morhaime also discussed the cancellation of Starcraft Ghost, what would have been a 3rd person action game set in the Starcraft universe.

  • Blizzard felt Starcraft Ghost couldn't be successful because of limited resources.
  • During Starcraft Ghost development, World of Warcraft was exploding while Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 were in development.
  • The team had to make tough choices on where to place its talent, and there weren't enough resources to go around.
  • With Starcraft Ghost canceled, they could focus on injecting all their talent into other products.

(2/3) We’re making "Dangerous Creatures" only require 1 rare, and we’re fixing a bug where some rare spawns didn’t give quest credit. Combined with the above change, it should be a lot easier to complete. (WarcraftDevs)

(3/3) World Quest bosses in Nazjatar will no longer show up with a silver dragon portrait. After this hotfix, is should be easier to tell what’s a boss for a World Quest and what’s a true rare spawn. (WarcraftDevs)

To address this, we’ve now changed it via hotfix so the “Battle for Nazjatar” will only become active when Nazjatar has a good mix of both Horde and Alliance players in War Mode. When that is not the case, an alternative event will become active called “Azshara’s Elite Commanders.” This is also available to players who are not in War Mode, and it also awards Nazjatar Battle Commendations for slaying Elite commanders during the event.

We’re continuing to monitor and investigate reports of server lag during the event, and we’re acting on feedback about significantly imbalanced areas. We’ll let you know as we make further changes.

Thank you for your patience and continued feedback!

    • Developers’ note: With this change more players will have a chance to engage these rare spawns before they are eliminated.

    • Memory of Lucid Dreams’ (Essence) Major Power now correctly lasts the full duration for Fire Mages, Frost Mages, and Protection Paladins.
      • Developers’ note: The Minor Power on Memory of Lucid Dreams has a custom implementation for Fire Mages and how it interacts with Fire Blast charges. However, this wound up being too strong relative to other Essences’ Minor Powers. As such we’re reducing its proc rate by 33% for Fire Mages, which should keep this as a very strong option to use in the Minor Slot, but much closer to the potency of other Minor Powers.

    • Crucible of Flames’ (Essence) Minor Power no longer procs when casting abilities that apply crowd control to a target.
    • Fixed a bug preventing Purification Protocol's (Essence) Minor Power from correctly generating threat when damaging enemies.

  • The "Battle for Nazjatar" no longer ends prematurely.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented Horde players who participated in Battle for Nazjatar from receiving rewards if they died when it ended.

  • Shadow Sight Orbs now spawn within the Robodrome Arena.
  • The power coils have powered-up, and are now ready to zap shy arena players within the Robodrome starting area who linger too long.

These led to our verification of hundreds of new and unique bugs. Your efforts have directly contributed to making WoW Classic a better experience for everyone when it opens to the world on August 27.

We have now reached a stage where WoW Classic is in a good state for reconciling remaining issues, and we intend to shift our focus away from the closed beta, which will end on July 12.

Internally, we’re working through the aforementioned bug fixes, testing the high-level zones such as Eastern Plaguelands, and doing our raid testing. We’ll make sure Ragnaros and Onyxia are ready to go.

As for what’s next, the final stress test is now coming up on July 25-26 (we’ve changed this date since we first announced it). During that global test, we will roll out our multi-region hardware in preparation for the worldwide release of WoW Classic. In addition to getting many more testers to play through the initial leveling experiences, it will be a test of the fixes and tweaks that we’ve made and are making to the game.

We’re planning a small in-game event to end the closed beta on July 12. We’ll see you there, and we’ll post reminders for you just before the stress test, as well as reminders in August as we gather for name reservations and ultimately for the release of WoW Classic.

Thank you!

There are more people with low latency now than there were in 2006, so we expect for some it might feel different, but it is working as expected.

Creatures and NPCs

  • Unleashed Arcanofiend’s Proximal Chaos attacks are now a bit less chaotic.
  • In Nazjatar, there are now fewer slugs in rocks. Eww.

Items
  • Epic gems with a secondary stat now provide 50 of the secondary stat (was 60).
    • Developers’ note: The power increase of Epic gems over Rare gems is too large, putting players in situations where the right choice is to use a much lower iLvl item with a socket over a Titanforged upgrade. We’re making this change before Season 3 begins to limit the number of affected players.
  • Fixed a bug that caused some punchcards in the to be labeled "Titanforged" at a lower item level than intended. (No items were harmed in the making of this bugfix.)
  • Chain Ignitercoil is no longer sold by vendors in Mechagon.
  • Secret Fish can now be sold, and the sounds they make have been fixed. Don’t tell anyone.
  • Ionized Minnows can now be stored in the Reagent Bank, as well as Engineering and Fishing Bags.
  • The following now automatically use reagents stored in your reagent bank:
    • Crafting all Junkyard Tinkering blueprints.
    • Contributing to construction projects.
    • Using the Charging Station to charge Empty Energy Cells.
  • Heart of Azeroth
    • The Seething Rage buff from Blood of the Enemy (Essence) will now properly modify the critical damage dealt by any summoned units, such as those summoned by a Shaman or a Monk's Storm, Earth, and Fire.
    • Classes with pets that use energy will no longer cause their pets to gain an increased energy regeneration rate when using Memory of Lucid Dreams (Essence).

Missions and Followers
  • Fixed an issue where some players could receive the Zen'lan Lost Treasure Map mission a second time with no loot. The mission is now removed if it has already been completed.
  • Missions with the Deep Sea mechanic now have a base time of 24 hours and are properly countered by Naval Expert.

Player vs. Player
  • “Call to Arms: Nazjatar” can now properly be completed by slaying the opposing faction in Nazjatar.
  • Battle for Nazjatar
    • Additional improvements have been made to this event. It should now become active more often, while still ensuring that there are mix of Horde and Alliance players present.
    • Factions that control more capture points within the Battle for Nazjatar event will now yield more Victory Points. This works similarly to Arathi Basin or the Battle for Gilneas.

Quests
  • Reduced the amount of quest items needed to complete many Requisition quests and Bounty daily quests in Nazjatar.
  • "The Reclamation Rig" construction project will now more reliably give achievement credit to all players who contributed to its construction, even if further away when it is completed.
  • Players can now see Venture Co. Transport Balloons while "Taking The Air Out".
  • “The Doppel Gang” should now reliably give credit to all players who participate.
  • Avarius should now spawn as expected once all the Brinestone shards have been placed.
  • The Zoatroid Harvesters required for "Dirty Dozen" now path better, and are more tap friendly, with appropriate health.

Support
  • Fixed an issue preventing some players from submitting tickets in-game.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some tickets submitted in-game to incorrectly show as submitted via web.

World Quests
  • A recent change in diet has made the chitin on glimmershell crab shells more resistant to breaking during combat, resulting in Hefty Glimmershells of usable quality dropping more frequently when you’re in "A Steamy Situation".
  • The spell intended to recover your corpse during “Infestation of Madness” no longer incorrectly sends your corpse to Nazjatar.

World
  • Players should no longer experience phasing issues around the Tidestone in Nazjatar.

With a hotfix a few minutes ago, we’ve made it so that Fighting on Two Fronts no longer requires looting the Mechagon Fight Club chest.
The difficulty of this step as a requirement for upgrading Ripple in Space was out of line compared to other parts of the achievement.
We’ll note this in our next hotfixes update.

Battle for Azeroth Season 3 Live This Week
Season 3 begins today, bringing with it reward changes, Azshara's Eternal Palace raid, Operation: Mechagon mega dungeon, a new Mythic+ season/affix, and a new PvP season!

Content Difficulty and Rewards Changes
With a new raid opening, the item level of many rewards are going up!

  • New Maximum Item Level: The maximum possible item level will go up to 455.
  • Azshara's Eternal Palace: Gear from the new raid will range from LFR - 400, Normal - 415, Heroic - 430, Mythic - 445
  • World Quest Emissary Rewards: On the PTR, World Quest item rewards ranged from 380 to 400 for a geared character. Azerite Armor was item level 385 from world quests and 415 as the max from emissaries.
  • Dungeon Rewards and Difficulty: The item level of rewards from max-level Normal, Heroic, and Mythic dungeons will go up by 30. Baseline rewards will be 370 from Normal, 385 from Heroic, and 400 from non-Keystone Mythic. The new Mythic Only Dungeon Operation: Mechagon will have 415 baseline item level gear.
  • Mythic Keystone Dungeons: Mythic+ rewards will also go up by 30 item levels. As with Season 2, during the first week of Season 3 Mythic Keystone Dungeon rewards will most likely be capped at item level 415 (420 on the PTR). Mythic Keystones from your weekly chest today will likely go down by 4 levels instead of 1 when the transition occurs. The chest you open on the first week of season 3 will contain Season 2 rewards if you did a Mythic+ run on the last week of Season 2. (So, for example, if you did a Mythic 10 during the final week of Season 2, you will get a Season 2 item level 410 piece and 600 Residuum from your first Season 3 chest today.)
  • PvP: PvP Season 3 end-of-match rewards will also most likely be capped at 415 (420 on PTR) for the first week of the season. Rewards from rated PvP sources are 30 item levels higher than they were in Season 2, including Conquest rewards and the weekly chest.
  • Seals of Wartorn Fate: Seals of Wartorn Fate are not being reset and this same currency can be used for Azshara's Eternal Palace and Season 3 bonus rolls; the cap on how many can be held at once remains at 5.

New Raid - Azshara's Eternal Palace
Normal and Heroic Azshara's Eternal Palace opens this week, with Mythic and Raid Finder (item level 380 required) opening next week.

New Mega Dungeon - Operation: Mechagon
A new eight boss mega dungeon is coming with unique gear and rewards to earn. There is also a way to activate a hard mode of the dungeon which will likely give a unique challenge and reward similar to the Nightbane run in Legion Karazhan.

Operation Mechagon

Prince Erazmin leads a group of unlikely allies on a desperate mission into the heart of Mechagon. In a race against time, they must overcome King Mechagon’s army of mechanized monstrosities and defeat the mad genius before his doomsday device purges all organic life from Azeroth.

Dungeon Bosses: 8

Difficulties: Mythic

Level: 120 for Alliance and Horde

King Gobbamak: Obsessed with hoarding dangerous technology found amongst the scrap, King Gobbamak sits upon a pile of doomsday weapons that he lacks the intelligence to operate or understand.

Gunker: After years of coalescing into a concentrated cesspool. Mechagon's toxic waste has gained malevolent sentience. With the sanitation systems disabled, Gunker is free to ooze across all of Azeroth.

Trixie & Naeno: Trixie and Naeno, two of Bondo’s top lieutenants, have a turbulent relationship. While Trixie prides herself on ruthless efficiency, Naeno is the embodiment of chaos while behind the wheel. The only thing they have in common is their penchant for senseless violence, which they enjoy dispensing on anyone foolish enough to wander into their territory.

HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit: Predator of the skies, the HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit soars over the yard executing its prime directive, disintegrating all trespassers. With impenetrable armor and a lethal host of weapons, it annihilates all who are caught in its shadow.

Tussle Tonks: Mechagon’s premier mechgineers test their mettle (and metal) by building customized combat robots. While these tonks typically battle each other for glory, they combine their efforts to repel foolhardy organic intruders who dare venture into Mechagon.

K.U.-J.O.: As the repository for the city’s refuse, the Under Junk is a prime target for gnomes from Bondo’s gang who intend to steal valuable mechanical components. While Trash Mistress Wendy Cogsworth ceaselessly sorts the city’s junk, her loyal guard dog, K.U.-J.0., keeps out unwelcome intruders—mechagnomes and adventurers alike.

Machinist's Garden: Beautiful and dangerous, Head Machinist Sparkflux's metallic gardens are designed for both recreation and retribution. With a flick of a switch, the idyllic scenery transforms into a death trap from which no interloper can escape.

King Mechagon: As maniacal as he is brilliant, King Mechagon despises all organic life. With his mechoriginator primed and ready, nothing stands in the way of his scheme to purge the curse of flesh from Azeroth and mechanize the entire world.

Get ready to face the danger within beginning July 9.

Dungeon Changes
Rewards and difficulty are being buffed with the start of Season 3.

  • The new seasonal affix is Beguiling!
    • Azshara's Emissaries are present throughout the dungeon.
      • These emissaries will be placed in different trash packs each week.
      • These emissaries do not die, but teleport away based on certain conditions.
      • As of now they are affected by affixes, but do not give bolstering to other mobs when defeated.
      • Removing them from the battle does progress the enemy forces bar.
    • Emissary of the Tides
    • Enchanted Emissary
      • Queen's Decree: Blowback - Grants nearby allies Queen's Decree: Blowback, reflecting 150% of damage dealt back at the target.
      • Queen's Decree: Blowback - Reflects 150% of damage dealt back at the target.
      • Attacks will knock the Enchanted Emissary back.
      • Will teleport when her energy bar is empty.
    • Void-Touched Emissary
      • Queen's Decree: Hide - Deals Shadow damage equal to 50% targets' health to enemies in line of sight within a 60 yard radius.
      • Queen's Decree: Hide - Increases Shadow damage dealt by 50%.
      • Can see through Stealth and Invisibility.
      • Will teleport when brought to 1 health.
  • The item level of rewards from max-level Normal, Heroic, and Mythic dungeons will go up by 30. Baseline rewards will be 370 from Normal, 385 from Heroic, and 400 from non-Keystone Mythic. The Operation: Mechagon mega dungeon has baseline 415 item level rewards.
  • Mythic + dungeon scaling is now 10% per level instead of 8%.
  • Mythic Keystones will go down by an additional 3 levels when the season transition occurs to account for the difficulty increase. So if you did an 11 the last week of season 2, expect a level 7 key instead of a 10 in your chest when the new season starts.
  • Mythic+ rewards will also go up by 30 item levels; however, during the first week of Season 3, rewards from end-of-run mythic+ chests will likely be capped at item level 415 (420 on PTR).
  • The weekly cache that becomes available in the second week of the season will not be affected by this cap. If a player does a Mythic 10 dungeon during this coming week, they will get a Mythic 10 reward from their cache the following week.

Titan Residuum

Battle for Azeroth PvP Season 3
PvP Season 3 will start today with all new rewards and gear to earn.

  • PvP Season 3 end-of-match rewards will also most likely be capped at 415 (420 on PTR) for the first week of the season. Rewards from rated PvP sources are 30 item levels higher than they were in Season 2, including Conquest rewards and the weekly chest.

Heroic Battle for Stromgarde Warfront
Season 3 introduces Heroic Warfronts.

  • Initially heroic is only available for Battle for Stromgarde.
  • Heroic Warfronts are tuned for item level 415.
  • A team of 10 to 20 will be needed to que for a Heroic Warfront.
  • Heroic Warfronts will be much different from normal warfronts.
  • Heroic Warfronts will focus on the strategic aspects found in RTS games. Examples of new challenges include special units sent at your base that needs to be defended, the enemy commander appearing on the field, or where to best put resources at the moment.
  • You can lose a Heroic Warfront.

The goal here is to better calibrate the power of Red and Yellow Punchcards to have greater synchronicity. While the numbers have changed, the overall output should be similar. Players wearing a Pocket-Sized Computation Device with Red and Yellow Punchcards of comparable item-levels should see either a similar output or increased output (from yesterday).

New Raid: Azshara’s Eternal Palace
Battle against Nazjatar’s worthiest champions, face down unfathomable monstrosities from the deep, and confront the legendary Queen Azshara herself in this sprawling 8-boss raid.

Azshara’s Eternal Palace Normal and Heroic difficulties are now live, while the first wing of Raid Finder—The Grand Reception—and Mythic will open next week on July 16.

Season 3 Begins
Season 3 brings a wave of new dungeon content, including the new Mythic-only difficulty dungeon Operation: Mechagon, a new seasonal affix, and higher item-level Azerite armor to acquire in exchange for Residuum.

New Dungeon: Operation: Mechagon
Level 120 players will unite with Prince Erazmin and the Rustbolt Resistance to help overthrow his deranged father and destroy his Mechoriginator doomsday device in this new Mythic-only 8-boss “mega-dungeon.” Great rewards await you in Mechagon, but bear in mind that gnome-crafted loot might have some surprising properties. . .

New Mythic Dungeon Affix: Beguiling
Queen Azshara’s agents have infiltrated dungeons to strike Azeroth’s champions when they least suspect it. Three different emissaries will bolster enemy ranks and prove to be deadly adversaries, making them priority targets that must be defeated. Visiting emissaries can change by week and can even disrupt patrolling units who stop to praise them.

  • Void-Touched Emissary: Upon engaging this enemy, the Void-Touched Emissary will cast an uninterruptible spell over several seconds that will let loose a powerful 60-yard area-of-effect bolt of energy. Smite this foe before it completes the ritual, or hide from it to survive.
  • Enchanted Emissary: This powerful foe uses your own might against you by enchanting its nearby allies with an aura that reflects a large percent of damage back at the attacker.
  • Emissary of the Tides: This enemy applies an aura to nearby nemeses that cleanses and makes them immune to crowd-control effects.

Mythic Keystone Dungeon Updates
  • Item levels of rewards from level 120 Normal, Heroic, and Mythic dungeons have been increased by 30. Baseline rewards are now item-level 370 from Normal, 385 from Heroic, and 400 from non-Keystone Mythic dungeons.
  • Mythic Keystone rewards have been increased by 30 item levels. During the first week of Season 3, rewards from end-of-run chests will be capped at item-level 415 for Mythic Keystone at +6 difficulty, and the weekly cache will be a Season 2 reward.

    • Beginning the second week of Season 3, the weekly cache will not be affected by the cap and will reward Season 3 items at the higher item levels. Completing a Mythic Keystone at +10 difficulty during the first week will then provide the new highest item level in the weekly cache when it’s available in week 2.
  • Enemy health and damage in Heroic dungeons increased by 25%.
  • Health and damage of enemies in non-Keystone Mythic dungeons increased by 30%; Normal dungeons are unchanged.

    • Mythic Keystones have been reduced by an additional 3 levels, to account for this difficulty increase.
  • The enemy health and damage bonuses in Mythic Keystone dungeons now increase by 10% per difficulty level (up from 8%).

Titan Residuum
  • Increased Titan Residuum rewards earned in the weekly chest and from scrapping eligible Azerite armor.
  • Spend your hard-earned Titan Residuum on new item-level 430 and 445 Azerite armor.

Essences Updates
  • Eight new Essences are now available to earn in Azshara’s Eternal Palace, Operation: Mechagon, PvP, and Mythic Keystone Dungeons.

Azshara’s Eternal Palace Essences
  • Defeat the new raid bosses in Azshara’s Eternal Palace to earn the following Essences: Azeroth’s Undying Gift (tank), Condensed Life Force (damage-dealer), and Vitality Conduit (healer).

Operation: Mechagon Essence
  • Vision of Perfection – Drops off the final boss, King Mechagon.

Player versus Player Essences
  • Conflict and Strife – Earn 500 Conquest to unlock this Essence in your next weekly PvP War Chest.

Mythic Keystone Dungeon Essences
  • Clear a Mythic Keystone dungeon at level 4 or greater to receive the following Essences: Essence of the Focusing Iris (damage-dealer), Anima of Life and Death (tank), and Life-Binder’s Invocation (healer).

Player versus Player Updates
Welcome to Season 3: Notorious
Season 3 brings a wave of new player-versus-player content. Participants can earn two new Vicious Basilisk mounts, and the highest-rated players will unlock new Notorious Gladiator mounts.

Reward Updates
  • Item levels of rewards earned from War Chests from all PvP tiers (Unranked, Combatant, Challenger, Rival, Duelist, and Gladiator) increased by 30.
  • Item levels of end-of-match rewards for all PvP tiers increased by 30.
  • During the first week of Season 3, end-of-match rewards will be capped at item-level 415. This will require Challenger rank to earn. Beginning in week 2, Challenger rank rewards will be item-level 420.

New Heroic Warfront
Battle for Stromgarde
An ancient enemy has drawn the Alliance and Horde to the high seas, but the Battle for Azeroth still escalates on land with a Heroic Battle for Stromgarde. In the expansion’s first Heroic Warfront, the enemy commander takes a more active role on the battlefield, and it’s up to your team to bury him in the dirt.

With an army at his back, the enemy commander will join the first wave of forces in an attempt to destroy your fledging base. Grouping up is key to surviving the onslaught—tactics and strategy will be required to turn the tides. To win, you’ll need to coordinate with your premade group of 10 to 20 players to outmaneuver the enemy. Those who can survive and drive back the enemy will be amply rewarded with an item-level 430 equipment piece once per Assault phase.

Interact with the War Table in Boralus or in the Port of Zuldazar with your raid group to join the fight. Note that the option to queue for Heroic Battle for Stromgarde will become available when the next time a certain faction commences an assault on Arathi Highlands in a given region. Regions that are already partway through a Battle of Stormgarde attack cycle will be able to access Heroic difficulty the next time Arathi Highlands comes under attack during Season 3.

Sometimes the bodyguard feigns death too, but more often than not they do not. My druid and rogue have also had their prowl, stealth, and vanish abilities completely thrown out the window during gameplay with one of these bodyguards around. Sometimes an enemy will find me from distances where it seems like I should have escaped their threat already anyhow.

This is something that we are actively working on. We hope to have a hotfix out soon that will help your follower vanish so keep an eye out for it. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

[Bug] Berserker Stance
Modifiers to Critical Strike chance are reduced against enemies 3 levels higher than the player-character. We tested a variety of modifiers to Critical Strike, such as: Berserker Stance, the Cruelty talent, and critical strike chance on gear. They all behaved the same as they did in 1.12, so we’ve concluded that there’s no bug here. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

I’m not going to get too deep into the specific math on this one, but for the sake of clarity, I’ll say that this is not a per-aura modifier and it is separate than the 3% suppression that is baseline against +3 level creatures. There is a single modifier placed on total Critical Strike gained from auras that increase Crit chance such as those I listed in my last post. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Gaining Experience with Your Nazjatar Faction Bodyguards
By now you should have noticed that the main method of gaining experience with your chosen bodyguard for the day requires doing three daily quests (marked with blue exclamation points) that grant 100 experience each. However, there are a few other item drops found around Nazjatar that should help speed this process up a bit. Those of you wanting to finish Undersea Usurper for Snapback Scuttler should pay attention because one of the requirements is Aqua Team Murder Force / Aqua Team Murder Force, which requires you to get all 3 of your bodyguards to rank 30!

Upon reaching rank 20 with your Neri Sharpfin (H) or Hunter Akana (A) bodyguard, you will be given the quest Good Girl (H) or Wild Tame (A) which gives you the Snapdragon Kelpstalker (H) or Deepcoral Snapdragon (A) mount! Unlocking one of these mounts will also unlock the equivalent for the opposite faction to use.

Thanks to forum user Ryken for clarifying the other bodyguard rewards!
